You're probably just low on oil. Did you check it? How's the oil pressure?

oil level is good, and pressure is good as well..owners manual says the light doesn't indicate oil level and to have my car towed in for service, which is why I am a little worried..

Yeah the light is probably for oil pressure. If your low on oil your pressure can drop. Anyone know if the Z has a seperate sending unit for the guage and warning light? If so it could just be a bad sending unit.

also, I use synthetic and it's only been 4k since my last change. only had my Z for 4k miles so not sure if it's normal to loose that much oil that quickly?

Nope. As long as there is enough oil to keep the pump inlet submerged (about 1-1 1/2 qts), it will still make full oil pressure.

Oil pressure develops on the discharge side of the pump. As long as there is enough oil to keep the pump charged, there is no effect on oil pressure.

But if it's low enough or you go around a turn the pressure will drop to 0.

With 36450 miles on her and running it low on oil I highly doubt Nissan is going to cover it unless something broke causing the oil to leak. Myself I'd still take it in to have them once it over and who knows they may cover it.

Afterwards, if it's still running ok that is I would keep a close eye on the oil! Check it every few days to weekly. Chances are some engine life has been lost but how much is hard to tell. Sounds like someone sold you a car (possibly) knowing it was consuming oil.

That was pretty funny... and kind of scary at the same time...

I say, checking the dipstick after the car has been sitting for a few hours if you hadn't done so already (maybe it will be at the very low end of the dipstick). Hopefully it wasn't bone dry...

I think you've just solved your own problem. Check for obvious leaks. If you leaked 4.5 quarts of oil, your definitely gonna see some some oil on the under side of the car. Yyyyyeah..... If there's no oil on the under carriage, then go buy some, add it, and check your levels in a few days. Happy driving....
