Newb Engine Management A/F ratio ?'s
I am a newb to ECU A/F ratio tuning. Burn me if you want, I don’t care, where I live there aren’t very many people who tune ECU’s or have engine management systems. I have the following mods (intake, cat-back exhaust, pulleys, plenum spacer) I will probably get headers and high flow cats down the road. I want to know if I could get a piggyback system for tuning without spending over $300. I have tried searching this topic for months and have learned a lot, but there are still things I cannot find for the life of me.
The first thing is, is it worth getting one with the mods I have? (I figure I have already paid $300 for 8-10hp mod twice, this is just another mod for same gain/cost ratio)
I DO know:
1. A person can tune there A/F ratio with a wideband or a dyno
2. A good A/F ratio for an NA car is anywhere from 12.5-13.5
3. There are options out there for around $250 (SAFC II)
4. Every car is different, and tuning is very car specific
5. About the whole running rich and lean thing
6. Being NA I will probably only get 5-10hp gain from this
I DON’T know:
1. If I get a A/F controller, and go to a dyno, how can I tune it myself? What am I even looking for (what’s on the dyno sheet that tells me what to look for)
2. If I get a wideband sensor, how can I tune it myself? What am I even looking for? (what’s does the WB tell me and what to look for)
3. Is there somewhere on a piggyback controller where I can just set the A/F ratio to where it accounts for all rpms, or do each few rpms need to be individually changed?
4. Do I have to go to an expert and pay them $100 or more just to tune?
5. Where does this 12.5 – 13.5 A/F ratio number come from?
6. How do I find out my car’s “Magic Number”?
Sorry for the long post.
