let off the gas. you would only want to stay on the gas if you were racing, but thats another lesson. other than that good luck and have fun

Generally, you are supposed to take your off off the accelerator when you are shifting. Exceptions could be when you downshift where you press the blip the throttle to match your rpms to match your car speed then ease of the clutch with your foot off the gas

really in all it's a feel thing, different situations require different techniqes. As you drive your Z more you will get a better feel for clutch, gas release and apply...good luck and have fun.....

You've driven an automatic before, and you know how it shifts smoothly, on both upshifts and downshifts (when you floor it). The same thing should be when you drive a manual. Any time you jerk it, its not good for the clutch and trans. If you take any gear up to 3 or 4,000 RPM, you know the next gear you select for the upshift will be lower than the previous gear's RPM that you were at. Its all logical if you think about it. You're supposed to let go of the accelerator, depress clutch pedal, select the next gear, and let go of the clutch pedal and get back on the gas. Do this quickly, but not really that quick. By experimenting you'll see what you can better the next time around.

Hm... I have a question also. When I'm in heavy traffic, I go in first gear, then when i come to a stop, I engage the clutch fully then put it back into neutral. When i do so, there is a loud clunk noise. Anyone know why this happens? I have 800 miles on my Z, its fairly new.

I hear a noise also when I put it into neutral like you are saying, but the noise I hear just sounds normal, if that makes any sense at all. I can only hear it with the windows down and radio off.

I would recommend doing a search and learning how a clutch (and manual tranny) works mechanically. This will seriously help you understand what is going on when you depress the clutch pedal, shift gears, etc. It may seem like alot, but it's general car info everyone (especially Z owners) should know. It'll also help when diagnosing noises.

I mean I always roll with my windows down, and my radio volume at around 5-7. I guess thats why I hear it also. I know the basics of how a manual tranny works. I guess i should look into it more.

Where in Cali are you? You could always meet up with some members from a regional forum to see if the noise is normal. I'm in the Bay Area; we're having a mini-meet on July 28 which you're more than welcomed to join if you're in the area.

You mean you DISengage the clutch (push it in all the way), shift from first gear back to neutral, then let the clutch up . . . and you hear a clunk noise?

Whenever you're sitting in heavy traffic or at a stoplight, it is always best to shift into neutral and let the clutch pedal up, rather than keeping it gear with the clutch pedal pushed in.

But you should not be hearing any clunking noises. Take the car in to your dealer.

You hear the noise on new Zs in the lot. In neutral, press the clutch, and then quickly let it go, you hear a "thud" noise. Every time you do this you hear that thud noise. I wonder what it sounds like on other vehicles besides Zs.
