Reserve Tank Question (not fuel line recall)
I've put over 18 gallons in my tank once on a road trip. I knew that I had been averaging over 28 mpg and had reset my trip odometer at last fill. I wanted to go over 500 miles on a tank so I paid no attention to the "---" on the dte gauge because as Roast said, it doesn't figure the 2-3 last gallons. I went a little past 500 miles before filling and I took on less than 18.5 gallons (still had 1.5 gallons to spare).
The dte gauge must have a memory from previous use and it would be interesting to know how far back this goes and if it can be caused to reset as suggested in this thread. When in doubt, use one of your trip odometers to tell you your miles on present tank. The dte gauge, after all, is a luxury item.

This was only on highway.. this has happened twice.. where my fuel gauge would drop from a little over 1/4 to empty right away.
On street my car is fine.. it seems to have something to do with a constant g force put on the fuel.. any recalls on this?

yah the car competely died on me from fuel starvation. filled 14 gallons and then thinking that maybe the problem is with shutter valve closing too early so i tried to squeeze in more fuel.. put in 1 more gallon and it overflowed. the guage was showing full after i put in 14 gallons. don't have this issue on the street though as i have driven to where i could put in 16-17 gallons before. this only seems to occur when i am on the highway for long periods of time.. guage show 1/4.. which normally even with city driving i can squeeze 80 miles until fuel lights goes off.. but i was just crusing on the highway and all of a sudden.. it dropped to E. from 1/4..
Weird! OK, if the tank is full and overflowing after only 14 gallons then there still must have been 6 gallons left in the 20 gallon tank when your engine died of fuel deprivation. If the fuel guage dropped that fast something is not right with it. It still seems you have 2 problems, the guage and access to the fuel in your tank. They are probably somehow related. Good luck on this one.
lol thanks.. i am not sure if i'll ever put myself in to the same sitation as i was in last time where the car died from fuel starvation.. some guy recommend me to pull the fuel pump out and check for fuel in the tank.. but only point to do that would be when the car dies again.. which i am going to stay away from.. I just hope that for those unfourante souls that will run into the same problem as me.. check it to confirm the findings.
