Why couldn't my Z beat an M3

I know races aren't won on paper, but on paper, it seems like my Z would keep up with her. Granted she has more horses (333) but it takes a while to get there (7900 RPMs). My Z has more torque (274 vs. 262) and weighs about 200 lbs. less (offset by about 50 lbs. because I weigh 175 and she weighs probably about 120).
So I ask again, if we went to a half mile track, why couldn't my Z keep up with her M3?

As for cost of ownership, here are some examples:
- Oil Changes every 6k miles (diy): ~$90 (10-60 castrol is $10/quart, need 8)
- Brake Job (diy): ~$760 (brake fluid, sensors, pads & rotors from stoptech, ss lines)
- Valve adjustment every 666 gallons of gas: $600 (indie mechanic) $1200 dealer
- Alternator (diy): $300 parts
As for performance parts M3's get the BMW tax everywhere. Just tell whomever you're getting a price quote you're buying mods for a BMW and they graciously tack on 15-20% on the price
Mod prices, I guess, aren't too bad except when you go FI:
Volk C28N's: $3100 retail
Coilovers Tein: $1600
Exhaust/muffler: ~$1k lowend - $1.8k ti pipes
Midpipes: ~$1k (2 sections)
Headers: $1.1k
Intake: $300-500, although changing the filter to KN ~$40, produces about the same results.
Supercharger: $12000 ~500whp
HPF Turbocharger: $16000 ~672whp race gas
There is one guy who spent a boat load of money on his M3 to get ~900whp single turbo. Unfortunately, he couldn't put the power to ground efficiently so his 1/4 mile times weren't that great, good, but not in the 10's. Prolly had to do with using 19" street tire setup.

Screww the race! Think of the money you saved when buying a car which is better than the m3 from ALL angles. M3's are hard to work on and a waste of money cuz the potential just isnt there..
When all is said and done, your Z is a sexy *** car and the m3 is pretty bogous. I pity those who waste their time n money on m3's.

Wow that was the most uneducated information Ive heard in a while. I own a 350z as well but Im not going to be blinded by my own pride. The facts are the M3 is a better car inside and out. The s54 has won engine of the year 5 times for a dam reason. The Z may be better looking in your opinion and I cannot argue your opinion. But don't go and bash the M3 with no prior knowledge of the car. " Potentially the m3 just isnt there "... hahah wtf, how do you figure ??? The M series cars have been the most celebrated/decorated race cars in history.

wow this is ironic...
i actually ran my buddies 04 or 05 e46 m3 tonight just for ****s and giggles
(only to like 70mph) im not a fan of racing on the street
but yea... z's suck lol... they look good and handle decent and sound nice... but godamn are they slow...
given all i have done is a jwt pop charger, (went back to stock exhaust after gettin rear ended due to some drunk ***$hole) but still lol... i kinda wish i woulda traded my 04 wrx for an 04 sti at times than for my z roadster...
o well i still love my car but damn shes a pig... she needs a diet haha

A couple of months ago at the drags there was this M3. Asian dude and his hot asian GF. CA plates he was only running mid 15's. I was running Low 14's in my rustang. Vegas is about 1 1/10 slower than sea level.

My friend and I bought new Z and M3 at the same time...we kept going back and forth for months then we finally raced...(abandoned runway)...i beat him off the line and pulled through second then he started catching up but wasn't able to pass till over 100 mph ish...
then we switch cars and I just plain smoked him...at first i though he's just letting me win so his car looks good...then we started timing our runs with both of us in the car...plain and simple that M3 launches great and has better tires to boot...the shifts are so much smoother that you can stomp on the gas and have very little slipage...(might be tires) but in the end mine felt faster and torque'y...but his consistently beat my times...

I don't get it 0-60 for the z is 5.3, 5.2 at best, The M3 SMG 2 is 4.7 0-60! the 6 speed smg2 with a normal driver would prolly get around 5, and the convert smg is about the same since u know those are slower. We took a friends 04 smg m3 convertible and put it to the test, there is not way the top end of the Z could come close to a M3 even the convert, and as well from a stop, if the SMG2 m3 is in launch mode, it will make an evo look like its trying to hard, here is a clip of launch mode, its really amazing technology, u have to set it up with the push of a a few buttons and whatnot, impressive.

Wow this thread is old but here goes:
#1. Racing up to only 70mph will not show the power of most cars. A true highway pull should be rolling from whatever, say 30-45mph to 120mph. There is no need to be going into 5th gear, that's just crazy and proves to be pointless.
#2. I think a 287HP 350z would lose to the 333HP M3 simply due to the trap speed. Check out this website, http://www.autofacts.ca/classics/fast.htm . According to that website, a 2002 M3 traps 106mph in the 1/4 while the fastest 297HP 350z on there only traps 103mph, which is VERY hard to do in a stock Z. The best I've EVER gotten, trap wise, has been 99.7mph. Granted I'm at a crappy drag strip and elevation but I think the best any board member has gone has been 102mph. Regardless, even the new 2007 350z 306HP cannot keep up with the 333HP M3.
Sure you can beat them when they don't know how to drive, shift, etc.
HP for HP and proven trap speed versus trap speed, 350z loses to the M3.
