Default Modifications that cause you to loose your insurance list.

I would like to start a list of Mods that can cause insurance to deny your claim if you are ever in a accident and why. This is also a good place to debunk myths about what voids your insurance. Of course the only way to ever be sure is to never mod anything and stay stock.

So to start the list of concerns;

1) Removing Airbags - There have been reports that many insurance companies can/will void an accident claim if you remove a stock airbag and put in a part that does not have one, like a steering wheel or seat.

2) Aftermarket Headlights - When dirving at night with a non DOT approved light I have heard concerns that an accident at night can be denied.

3) Big brake kits - I have heard of some concerns that aftermarket big brake kits can cause insurance problems if you are in an accident.

And you haven't posted one shred of documentation or credible evidence that any of that is true.

If you want correct information about insurance coverage, either read the conditions spelled out in your policy, or call your insurer and ask. Do NOT rely on "I have heard", or what you read on automotive message boards.

A good way to help "debunk some myths" is to not spread them.

That is why I am posting it up for discussion.

So what does your policy say about the items above and who do you have insurance through?

There are a lot of different insurance companies, with a lot of different policies, and a lot of agents who will interpret the rules differently. I think you would be hard-pressed to come up with a list of things that apply to all people in all places.

I just looked over my policies (Nationwide). They spell out limitations of coverage, exclusions, grounds for cancellation, and grounds for non-renewal. There is no mention of anything about modifications to the vehicles.

Correct. Once again, if you want information about the rules your insurance company has about your policy, you need to either review your policy, or contact your insurer.

Do NOT rely on somethng you read on an automotive message board.

Its a good subject for discussion. I assume that any vehicle that is street legal is insurable.

That's a great example. All CF hoods are not "street legal" because they do not have the federally mandated crumple zones. I could easily see being injured by the hood of the car coming through the windshield in a frontal crash (hopefully not decapitated), and being denied coverage because you modified the car in a manner that directly contributed to your injuries. That kind of thing is probably never explicitly stated in a policy, but would certainly surface once the accident/adjuster reports caught up with you.

Thats what we are trying to figure out.

Some BBKs are listed as off-road use only to cover the company in the event of a failure. It is possible if you have a BBK and were in an Accident and the Insurance company said your BBK was not street legal, not DOT approved and installed improperly, therefore they deny coverage or give you a hard time about it.

Its similar to warranty work when you have an aftermarket part. Some places dont care, some will try to deny your claim if you have something un-related. The Moss-Magnuson Act outlines the rules reguarding this, but I am unaware of any such thing pertaining to your rights for insurance purposes.

I Guess what I am saying is that there is a risk that people don't consider when modding.
