Post 06 Tire Question

I've stopped by 3 dealerships in my area, looking for an 06 Touring Z, new. Every single one of them have the bridgestone potenza RE040 tires on them! I was under the impression that the 06 had RE050A's instead.

What scares me is the reviews the 40's have gotten. I see article after article about how they didn't even last 10k miles, bad wear, how they are horrible, etc. The 50a's seem to get a much better rating (also, on tirerack you can buy the 50a's but not the 40's).

As I don't want to have to immediately drop a bunch of money on new tires (especially since I will be dropping money on a set of winter tires already), what should I do? Can I demand the RE050a's? Or am I kinda screwed on this, and have to accept it with what they give me?

And while I'm asking questions, I've heard that XM / Sirius is no longer (or soon to be) commercial free.. If thats the case, then I don't really see reason to invest in either one, so if that could be confirmed or proof shown the other way, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!

No. The tires that come on the car are the tires that you get.

oh man, my 40s lasted about 8k miles on my 06. although i never took into account that chirping all the way into 4th would wear em down as much as peeling out. i launched mine ONCE with the factory tires thats it... 9k miles later in lookin at 800 bux.

my pops knows a yokohama rep, so i tried a set of avs es100's. not as much traction, but MUCH better treadwear.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was hoping to hear something different though! I guess I'm just gonna have to plan for another pair of tires for March : /

50s are for Track and Grand Touring only, AFAIK. I know I had them.

I got 24,000 miles with another couple left on my OEM tires when I put new shoes on.

Most of the guys with short tire life probably suffer from "leadfoot itis".

Only one of the dealerships had a GT, and it was a roadster (not sure if that makes a difference for the tires they use) - but it also had to RE040's.

This car is going to be my daily driver, and I drive on highways to and from work - 35 miles each way. I did take my current car to the track on occasion, but 95% of my driving will be more 'casual'. So for the most part I don't really need an 'ultra high performance' tire, but rather something that will have good tread in the summer but also get me through rain too (for winter, I am most likely going with a set of blizzaks or m3 sports).
