It'll vary, but you'll probably need at least something rated Snell SA2000. I think they have 2005 out now.

I bought the Bell M4. It's lightweight, fits nice, and was relatively affordable (under $500).

I think at a drag strip, a M-rater helmet (M for Motorcyle) will be fine. However, on the track, I'm almost positive you'll need a S rated.

Hey man, I'm was in the same boat with you. I've been shopping for a helmet for about 2 months. And I finally broke down and got one.

Open face helmets are less price than closed hemelts. So if you wanted to look cool like I did. Start saving that cash and get closed one, rated SA.

I got my Bell M4 Pro from www.discoveryparts.com for under $430. You can save a few more bucks buy going with a helmet that is not carbon fiber shelled.

In the links I provided you, there are helmets under $200 that are SA2005 approved. The ones they bought are likely full face helmets, with like said carbon fiber.

I got the SA2005 Bell M2 (full face) at http://www.discoveryparts.com for $368

As for price, keep in mind, you're protecting your head, so spend accordingly. Keep in mind, nobody plans on crashing, yet somebody always does.

That said, I think you can get a Bell motorcycle helmet at Walmart for around $50 that will look just like the big dollar ones.

If you're going to bother getting one, get and SA then you can do any event you want and not have to worry about meeting specs. M will get you though some place but not others. SA will get you everywhere.

Check Ebay there are often good deals out there. If you know what to look for you can find a good one, A lot of folks don't realize it is an SA helmet. IF they don't list the spec, email and ask about the sticker.. you may be suprised with the response.

I have picked up 2 SA2000 helmets for under $75 in the past year.

Good Luck,
MK

Before you buy anything, check with the club and/or the track to see what the minimum requirement standard is. Hate to buy a nice shiny helmet, bring it to the track ready to go and can't pass tech.

For just about every track event on the east coast requires a SA2000 or newer helmet. We require one.

There are some good helmets out there less than $200, and since the SA2005's are out, the SA2000's will be on sale. The G-force Hybrid is a good alternative

Some good places to look are:

www.racerwholesale.com
www.wholesalehelmets.com

etc.

Shoei or Arai would be my pick. Go full face helmet, you want to be able to protect your whole face & head.

If your car has airbags, you're better off with a 3/4 helmet.

If you're referring to the SCCA letter ( http://www.cenla-scca.org/PB05-01AirbagAdvisory.pdf ) that came out a couple years ago, I don't think that's really valid. When I was looking for a helmet earlier this year, I asked on the SCCA forum about the status of that letter and this was the response I got:

btw this has nothing to do with the SCCA's research on possible injury caused by full-face + airbag incidents... that was research into adding airbags to formula-type cars and has no bearing on street vehicles where the driver sits in an upright position.

Almost everybody I've seen or talked to driving street cars on the track are still using and recommending full face helmets.

+1
For the small $ difference, I would go with the full face for better protection.
