People Who Mod Their Z Then Part Them Out
#21
Who doesn't love to see the long list of mods on a Z on Ebay including 20k on a stereo, 10k on engine bling, 20k on a motor, 20k on a wide body kit and scissor doors and bragging it was on a B rated magazine and now wants 75k on a 30k car that depreciated?

I don't know why people do. I've bought things out of poor planning. I wanted to do one thing then decided I wanted to do something else. Colossal waste of money but its not the end of the world. I"ve finally settled on a plan for my Z and I'm not going to deviate from it.
On the other side it does mean that I can find really good parts in the classified section for a much better price than retail. I'm not going to complain about that. Still there are some things I will only buy new.

I purchased my Z 1.5 year ago and invested about 8k cash into the car (wheels, Nismo intake and exhaust, spoiler, system). Probabaly I will be selling my car somewhere next year - because I can not justyfy dropping more money into the Z. I will be looking on a new 335 or m3.
Over those 2 years the Z has lost a lot. currently 300HP in nothing impressive, the interior quality is simply not the best, the Nissan service also needs to be improved... and so on. Additionally the 2003 can be purchsed for under 20k - so the car lost a lot of its image.
I guess people are selling their cars - because Z is not the same car as it used to be in 2003/2004. Market changed - but Z is basically the same.
Dont get me wrong - it is still one of the best looking cars - but the overall value decreased. In 2003/4 it was a sports car - now it is just a sporty looking car.

Some folks mess around with the engine then find out that they have voided the warranty and they themselves fu*** up. So they sell the car to next guy who is glazed eyed over the Z. Never buy once a car has been drastically changed unless you can trust the seller...just my 2 cents

And that is exactly why I will never buy an used car that is commonly modded, e.g. Z's, RX-7's, Civics.. You never know who stressed their engine to the max and then transformed it back selling it as "completely stock." There is a reason why modded cars take such a resale hit. They are not and will never be as reliable as they once were. Yet many people get around this by selling the car and the mods seperately without taking the loss of reliability hit that they should.

I agree with the fact that it seems like some people have to much money, but comming from someone who is by no means rich, I will reap the benefits of being able to purchase aftermarket parts for a reasonable, if not great, price.

If you plan on selling your Z and put more than 20k into it you are a BALLER. I have had my Z since 03. I got it with 4k miles, paid it off within a year and a half. At this point i had a lip kit, along with some wheels and tires which i paid 1100 for combined. Pimped it like that for a year or so, and in late '05 is when i finally did a sound system. This past summer i went F/I and got some sexy wheels. Now im building my motor and swapping my turbo kit. Im losing money on the sale of my kit, but im getting something bigger and better..
Like someone previously mentioned though. His only upgrade would be to a gollardo. Its kinda like that, you compare how much the car as a whole has cost you and then compare it to cars that are 100k plus in value but not as fast as my Z. Feels soooo goooood..
As far as parting er out goes, i'd rather just do my research and go into it with all the information i need. Buy my parts new, and piece my car together myself.
If you mod a car, you give it a personality change and by parting it out your stripping your car of its uniqueness relative to all other Z's. If i were to sell my car it would be to someone who appreciates what i have and is willing to give me a reasonable offer on my car. NOT blue book..

Mods really dont get you anything on the sale of the car, in some instances can make it harder to sell the car.
Despite the financial hit of the depreciation of a used part. It is still more profitable to sell a part used than to sell it on the car. This is of course factoring in the fact that you have hung on to your stock parts in the garage and have the time to remove/replace/sell
Many of us who have the money to play dont have the time to do that.

My stang is in this situation. It will be leaving me soon if i can let it go, but it is so complete I wont sell a single thing off of it despite what the mustang vultures want.
Its got a list of things that will make you tired of reading. and I couldnt see selling anything off the car that makes it what it is. I just want someone to get a solid complete car that they can enjoy as much as I have and possibly take it to the next level.
It has every bolton, heads/cam/intake/built motor/wheels/suspension. Its going to be tough to let that part of my life go, but I am going to get into something quiet for a while
Its g35 sedan or is300....
cant decide and dont have to yet

So a Ferrari Testarossa with similar #'s as the 350z is only a sporty car? I find it sad that people define a sports car purely on how fast it can do the 1/4 mile in....
Also find it funny that people will slam a 350z when comparing it to a BMW 335 which costs $13k more... (base price vs base price) and is 4 years newer.
Not sure how you can say the Z has lost a lot when its been the same car for the last 4 years... Have you ever driven your Z at a track or drag strip? Or are you one of those people who just wants the fastest car on paper that he can afford so you can brag about it even tho he has never taken it to a track....
For a car thats going into its 5th year it holds it own pretty well, look at Car and Drivers latest track test, the Z kicked @ss....

...
I had around $20k-$30k in my S2000 and ended up selling it as a whole to a private owner.
All my mods were paid for as well.
In all honesty its not about how much you spend as some of you think, its more of you get tired of it, or at least I did. I wanted something different regardless of how much was spent. The car just didnt do it for me anymore.
