Default Driving manual in the Philippines

I just got back from visiting families in the Philippines. It seems that they downshift everytime they slow down. At 2nd or 3rd they are still below 2rpms. Even at stops they have the clutch in and wont release until they the car gets going again. From 2nd to 1st they just step on the clutch instead of pressing on the brakes. I wonder if I can apply that here?

You can but your clutch won't last very long. I down shift in second and first if i'm not going that fast.

Do not take driving lessons from your family.

Hey I resent that statement. But then again my dad is a crazy-***/bad driver. But then again my mom is a pretty good driver. 52 and a clean driving record. I guess its either really hit or miss. lol.

LOL, were you trying to make those crazy new U Turns on Edsa Street in Manila? I thought I was a good driver here, but man those taxis drivers in the PI are nuts...Honking your horn is called defensive driving there, oh yeah, and if you are pedestiran, you better run when you cross the street! cause you will be a target for them!

To a degree it is safer in the PI because most of the time traffic is so bad that even if you get in a wreck, the damage is not that great, just a fender bender.

My dad is a NY driver and when he was driving over there the **** was crazy. He wouldnt give in to anybody and nobody would give in to him. Its especially scary when people try to pass people in oncoming traffic.

Downshifting is a normal part of driving, doesn't everyone downshift? Not only does it help you stop a little sooner it also helps you stay within a good powerband.

It is indeed a whole different world! I spent my college years there and drove in the crazy streets of Manila. There are six cars in a three lane road! You have to keep an eye out for sneaky pedestrians because most of the time they just courageously cross on the main highway. No pedestrian laws at all! It's worst than NYC...you can hear honks everywhere! I love Manila! It's a fun place!!!
