Did my search, but this isn't a technical question. I'm looking for feedback of the effectiveness of the stock navigation system in rural areas. I know most systems work fine in urban areas, but have tried several brands and they all have proved unreliable about 20% of the time in the rural areas..exactly the places that maps aren't easy to come by and mistakes amount to miles. I've been directed down golf cart paths, gated-off logging roads, dead ends and regularly been routed ways that were not the shortest, quickest, nor "most use of freeways".
The Z system looks great and of course will fit the space perfectly. I just don't want to spend $2000 for looks. Does anybody with an updated Z system have experience using it in rural areas? Do I wait for a further updated disc? Thanks

I have had the Navigation for almost a year and I love it. The stock system works very well in the rural areas. I am very amazed when a system can tell me the names of most of the dirt roads in my area. Just wanted to give my ![twocents](https://my350z.com/forum/images/smilies/twocents.gif)

The portable unit I'm using makes these type of errors daily in rural areas. My friend, who has a new BMW stock system had the same thing happen to him in rural Napa, CA. county, and he was low on gas. They are marvelous in urban areas and he used the portable in Europe last summer without a glitch.

The Z navigation system is pretty good but I don't think you're going to outperform aftermarket systems with it. Number one, yes some of the roads don't always appear and newer roads (recent construction) aren't listed. I just upgraded my DVD and I still have new construction (roads built within the last year) that don't appear on the Nav. #2 The upgrade DVD's (unless you can get a hookup) can be VERY expensive, especially from the dealership. I believe they sell for around $500 from Nissan but can be had on eBAY for around $150 on average.
Either way I would say you are better off with an aftermarket system. Try Magellan.
