Why? These days, there's no mechanical justification for this.

honestly, there have been times where I've left my keys in the console overnight

A previous home, my dad, his wife and her daughter use to leave all the cars unlocked, including the house.
I was like "wtf, over"

Or do what I did. Get a turbo timer (yes I know i dont have turbo). But the simplicity of leaving the car on for short errands or warming up just has its many benefits.

Why don't you just take the key fob off the ring and leave it running but lock the doors.
I've done that only when I'm transporting my Miniature pinscher with me.

You folks do realize that some (not most) insurance companies will not cover a stolen car if the keys were left in it. Check your policies.

i'm about 90% sure you can't lock the doors with the motor running.

You can. I do it all the time. I got a keychain where you can unhook the keyfob from the key. So thats why I do it.
