Camaraderie with other officers. Regular people do the same stuff as cops do, but might get ticketed for it. Cops just won't.

They are underpaid and have to deal with a good deal of scum, so they are probably due a little preferential treatment in minor traffic situations.

First off, I haven't seen many police vehicles with tinting that was below there legal limit but there are certain reasons wwhy they may do this. #1 K-9 Vehicles, those dogs freak out when they see people and people sometimes freak out when they see them. Also, those dogs are in the back of a car all day, I think we can at least cut them a little slack for trying to keep them cool. #2 Many officers have certain things in their vehicles that don't need to be seen by the general public. For instance I know a few officers that are also members of the bomb squad. Because of this they may have C-4 or other explosives in their vehicle that they want to keep hidden.

This happens often and there is a reason for it. Many times cops respond to situations that they need to arrive quickly but are not authorized to run "code" (with their lights and siren activated). Therefore, they will try to get there as quickly and as safely as possible without using their lights and siren the whole way. But, if they come up on a red light they will activate their lights real quick to get through and then turn it back off. I don't know about you but if I've got a problem and I need a cop there quickly I don't mind that they are using their lights when they aren't supposed to.

Now, am I saying that some of them don't obey all traffic laws? No, certainly not. But, what I am saying is that you need to cut them a little slack because sometimes they are doing something that you think is wrong but there is a very good and valid reason for it.

Kill switch

If you are seriously worried about getting a ticket with 5% tint. This is what you do!

Find from the service manual the power wires to the window motors or to the switch in the door. or just pull apart the door and figure out which one it is. either way!?

then cut the wire and run an in- line switch that u place under the dash or where ever you like, preferabbly hidden..

When a cop rolls by always roll down your windows. iF you ever get stopped, for speeding or maybe just cause he saw your windows.

Roll your windows Down, flip the switch and NO more roll back up!! if he ask you to roll up your windows cause he wants to check the tint. tell him that the motor went out a while back and keeps acting up and that you plan on getting it fixed, but new window motors cost a bunch, or pretend like it all the sudden stopped working???

LE is a field most don't understand untill they are in it.

cops don't wear seatbelts on duty because:

1. There are times when we have to jump out of our cars in a hurry
2. When removing a seatbelt, it often gets caught in our gears while the bad guys are shooting or running out of sight

Cops turn on lights and off to break intersection because:

Not all calls required a code 3 run (ex. drunk guy yelling at people)
These calls by policy does not allow a code 3 run, but we get there fast (breaking intersection) to prevent the issue from futher escalating.
Another example: I was speeding down the road to catch up to a traffic violator. Whe I got there I got a call of a baby choking. I turned on my lights and sirens to make an illegal u-turn to assist with the child. I was then informed that the child is now breathing and medical personal was on scene. I turned off my lights and respond routine. I got a complaint from a citizen that I was speeding and using my lights to make an illegal turn for no reason.

Doing better things than traffic:

Crimials drive too. Most felony arrests are from traffic stops. Ted bundy, 911 highjacker was pulled over on day before, timothy McVagh, the cult guy in Arizona, etc....

by doing traffic enforcement we help prevent accidents, keep insurance cost down and possible roadrage. Image how everyone would drive if there are no traffic cops.

I have gotten pulled over many times in GA b/c my tint was to dark (5%). If ever in GA stay out of COBB county they have tint meters and love to use them. 1st ticket $100, 2nd $125, 3rd $175, and they keep a record of all the tickets u have been given and it gets more expensive every time. And NO I was not doing anything else wrong.

This is a grat idea until they use a meter. You know they do have meters that work on stationary windows as well, right?

ummm...they can't use a meter on a window that isn't there. if you roll them down, they're inside the door.

granted...this would only work on a ZR. they could still get you for the rear-hatch tint in a coupe.

There are more windows that can be measured than you think. Besides, get caught with your little rig and, depending on the mood of the cop, could get you another cite for hindering (arrested in some jusrisdictions).

I've talked about this dumb trick every time I hear it brought up and it pretty much comes down to this; If the cop realizes you are a jackass he could technically say your window not functioning was unsafe and therefore impound your vehicle for having faulty equipment, plain and simple.

The bottom line about tinting your vehicle below the legal limits is simple; if you're gonna do it (I have 5% all around) accept the consequences. If you get a ticket don't ***** about it and just take it in stride. If you can't afford to get a ticket for tint then don't tint your windows illegally.

CASE CLOSED

i agree with getting caught, but you're incorrect about there being more windows than I think. notice i was referring to the ZR. it only has 3. 2 doors, one windshield. well, there's the tiny wind block window or whatever it's called, but that doesn't count. : )

OCZTrack - that sums it up about as much as one could.

I have been pulled over 7 times for my tint.

I got 1 fix it ticket
Saved me from the 2,3,and 4th time I got pulled over.
Fixed the tint, got it signed off, and put it back on.

Got another Fix it ticket
Saved me from the 6th, and 7th
Then fixed it again, and got lighter tint

More people than not (who get windows tinted) also get a small strip tinted on the windshield. That has to be within legal limits as well.

If someone pulled this little stunt on me (especially after seeing the windows function prior to the stop), i'm gonna screw with you and you will get tickets for something or even worse.

As pointed out earlier, if you are going to play the game and illegally tint your windows, then do so, but just accept that you can get caught. Compound that with little tricks to try to fool someone is just gonna make you get it worse.

^yeah, that's very true.

there's almost always something a cop can find to cite or at least harass. i definitely wouldn't risk it. you can still get pretty dark tint and stay legal.

i don't have plate on the front and won't complain about it if i get a ticket. well, not too much anyway : ). i didn't have one on the 97 prelude i used to have either, and I had a total of 4 warnings for it. i'm sure if i ever had tried some game like the above, or had an attitude, it wouldn't have been a warning.

Please please please do us all a favor and do not apply to be the police...you obviously have no idea what it takes and what we go through.
P.S. if there is a law against tint, he is stopping crime by writing the citation.

I have yet to get pulled over for tint yet. I am assuming that considering where I live (unless I am in the "ghetto" areas, which I am usually not) they won't harrass me just for tints. I have 20% all around, so not *that* dark, and some cops probably think its legal, or borderline so they don't bother. I am assuming that if I get pulled over for something else though, they will add a tints ticket in there.

Not sure about where you live, but in my jurisdiction, the officer must have a meter to test the tint before a cite can be issued.

My only issue with this is that the window tint ticket is more than the average speeding ticket. I wonder which one is going to hurt somebody first. The fine doesn't fit the crime.
