But by asking this question, seems that you are not that familiar with manual yet. So my recommendation for the next time you are in this situation:

1. Turn VDC/TCS off
2. Clutch In
3. Push into 1st
4. When light turns green, floor the gas and let off clutch.

*edit... damn, 5 people replied just as I was typing that! I need to learn to type faster...
+1 Lol

These are the things I did when I first started driving a manual at a stop on a hill.

1) Have your foot on the brake and have it in neutral.

2) When you think the light is going to turn green soon, put it into first.

3) Then let the clutch out slowly untill the car starts to shake slightly and then keep it there, when light turns green take your foot off the brake and then press the gas and let the clutch out slowly. That's the way I started.

When you get good at that you can use the clutch and gas to keep the car still on a hill without using the brake( I do this right before the light turns green). Basicaly it's almost like riding the clutch while using the gas slightly just enough to keep the car from moving forward or backwards.

The best place to learn it is in a empty place with a small hill. Just keep doing it there untill you feel pretty comfortable. Then you won't be nervous about hiting the car in back of you on a hill.

Hope this helps, gl.

actually I hate when ppl behind me, on a hill or not, get so close to my car that you can't even walk between them. Then when I try to edge up a little, they move forward with me.

i learned to drive a stick all by myself... and everything mentioned in this thread... i have done before.

u should know when u are approaching a hill.... give a buncha space in front of you.... get to a complete stop asap..... then as the car behind you approach ur rear end.... just let go off ur brake and slide back. of course dont do it so much.... but once the driver behind you see that... they know u have a manual and more likely than not, they'll give you space.

when i started... i didnt have insurance so it would be a really bad idea to slide down and hit some1... so to better be safe than sorry... i had to ride on my clutch, that means to rev to 3-4k and let ur clutch out slowly.

it is bad for your clutch, but hey... u avoid accident.

if u were given enough space though... i'd say go practice how to do it properly.

another thing.... learn to drive a stick urself... it isnt that hard. u chose to learn it on ur Z (assuming u have one) so the Z should get a little beat up.

1) Keep modulating your gas and your clutch so that your car alternatively lurches forward and rolls back, over and over again, announcing to the world, "Hey, y'all, back off! I'm in a manual! And I'm...not...sure...how to drive it..."

2) Put car in neutral. Left foot on brake (or e-brake it). Right foot on gas. Rev up to >6800 and bounce it off the limiter. Furrow your brow and then pick your nose angrily, flicking your boogers at the pedestrians. People will think you're mad-as-hell-pissed that you're stuck on a hill with folks packed behind you.

3) Move to an area without hills.

4) Get an automatic.

(only kidding )

Pass in the emergency lane.. that's seemed to work out for a few on here... Just kidding.

It's all about clutch and gas... just practice and be ready to find your brake pedal quickly just in case.
