oh... I was under the impression that to break in a new engine, you couldn't floor it yet, or drive it harshly in any way, until the break in period was over. Guess I was wrong. I'll try to remember that next time. Sorry for being such a noob.

The dealer KEEPS stating that there are no know issues with this, and they have never heard any complaints. Finding it hard to believe. 90% of my driving is on the HWY.
MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR OIL RIGHT AT THE SCHEDULED CHANGE... I went 20 miles over the 7000, and it started sounding like tin cans again. I now carry a quart in the trunk of the car at all times.

Anyone notice the new 2006.5 350z at the dealer? I talked to a sale rep. and he said the only thing they changed in the .5 was the airbag seatbelt sensor. Something about the airbag sensor turning off when no one is sitting in the passenger side.
Now why would they make a .5 just for that change? sounds fishy to me.
fyi, my nov05 2006 350z is going through a oil consumption test.
I don't mind adding a quart of oil every 1k...thats actually normal for a high performance car. However, when I hear other 2006 owners who do not have to add oil...I get redlights flashing. Maybe I'm jealous.

I would disagree with having to add oil just because it is a high performance vehicle. Unless you have some major mods, you should not be burning any oil at all. I am babying the car through these tests and still losing 1/2 qt in 500 miles and around 2/3 qt for 1000 miles. I find that very excessive considering I am stock with synthetic oil. I think I will revert to conventional for the next tests to see what happens.
I spoke with a buddy of mine whos' a service manager at nissan.. and he said that a hand full of the 06rev-ups "including mine" tends to burn oil, and the best way to figure out if you are burning oil is to do the dealer recommended "oil consumption test" which i am going through right now... just change your oil with the factory breakin oil or let the dealer do it, and just check your oil level da 1st 500 miles after changing your oil, and then the next 250 miles, and if your car has no reading on the dpstk between those 750 miles.. then you have a problem and the dealer buys u a new motor... i've been riding my car pretty good for being brand new and so far with the consumption test, the oil level is still looking good after da 1st 500miles.. the car will burn oil to correctly lube the seals.. but if all fails after the consumption test, then u need a new motor...

There's obviously another issue at hand here however as the consumption I'm reading about here is ridiculous.

For years the 5.0 roller cammed Mustangs were known for eating a qt. every oil change from day one. You can tear one down at 120k+ miles and still find crosshatch in the bores though too.

OK.Thanks. I think my head is all screwed up now with all this discussion and my frustration over the issue.

i just got my oil change done last week and put regular oil in it...not synthetic, isnt that what the manual says...."dino oil" or even a thread on here said the same thing....synthetic burns worse than conventional?

I am also a firm believer in checking your oil every 2nd fill up.
But I digress,
Your oil consumption problem is unacceptable and I hope you find a resolution to your Z's issue.

Well, how do you know you are burning oil? Do you smell it? Do you see it "L" on your dipstick? Did you check your dipstick level when you got your car back from its oil change initially? Are you following the break-in procedures?
I have an 06 Rev-up and not encountered any oil issues. Had the car since Feb 06. Over 8k miles now.

I've gotten in the habit now of checking the oil every couple hundred miles.
I take it back in tomorrow morning. I have gone 1000 miles since my last visit. I'm sure they will be thrilled to see me since I have been driving Nissan Cusumer Affairs crazy with my phone calls and they in turn call the dealer. Eventually, maybe I will wear them down.

i switched back to dino oil 5/30 last oil change. i've noticed my 03 engine uses about 1/2 qt. of synthetic between oil changes.
i don't need to check my oil level until the next oil change with dino oil.

switching to dino oil may temporarily hide a problem but after an engine has 2k plus miles I would run synthetic as it keeps all the seals in gaskets in better condition. And I agree with sean with the breakin. I just got done rebuilding my vg30dett in my 300zx and I put about 2500 miles on it in just a couple weeks, drove it fairly hard to get the rings to seat and it runs perfect. Actually took it on a 2000 mile roadtrip with only a few hundred miles on the engine. Getting ready to pick up a 350z now.
