The few motors I've built in the past have had the cam broken in, motor checked quick for leaks, oil changed, and then had the snot beat out of them the first time around the block.

You should most certainly floor it occasionally though! While else drive something w/ a performance engine?

That's exactly right. The first 20 mile on the motor is the most important. Acceleration and Deceleration are equally important. You should also change the oil often to get our all the metal shavings (20 miles, 100 miles, 200 miles, 600 miles, and 1200 miles). If you don't those metal shavings will bond to other parts if left in the motor too long. Not a good thing. If you don't put some load on the motor, your rings will wear unevenly creating "pockets" for the oil to come into the cylinder....causing you to burn oil. Not fun....MOTOTUNE break-in is the only way to do it. I do it on all my motors....and I never burn oil. Do a search for the Mototune break-in and you will be enlightened.

EDIT: To address the synthetic issue. You do not want to switch to synthetic in a new motor until you have the rings set. I wouldn't do it until about 5k miles. Synthetic oil is thinner, slicker, and can get into more nooks and crannies thus burning more oil if you have the oil consumption problem. So wait until everything is MORE than broken-in...then make the switch.

That's a myth. Many auto manufacturers install synthetic oil at the factory.

Those that do use different rings than most manufacturers. Read above...it is no myth.

Actually, the service director at the dealership told me the Z ships with Synthetic as the break in oil. Not that I believe him because I believe it is actually a synthetic blend, but if anyone knows the answer for sure, I would like to know. I trust a lot of the people on here a lot more than a dealership's service manager.
