Got into an accident earlier and now Insurance is asking me questions.
So I got into an accident about a month ago. The adjuster came to look at my car about a week and a half ago to assess the damages. As he was looking at my car and sizing up the damage we began talking about Z and Supras for probably the next two hours after all the work was done and I got my check. Today I got a phone call from Geico asking what modifications I have done to my car. If I tell them about all of them, will it make my insurance go up? What would you guys say in my situation?

Let them know about your high-risk mods i.e. the ones that either will get damaged or stolen. I will declare your rims & tires if I were you. All the other mods you have listed have very low risk of being damaged or stolen.

Your car is insured by KBB value or total amount financed (like if you are financing $35K that is what your insured value is)... It will say the insured value on your insurance statement...
Insurance wont cover modifiactions... IE. Aftermarket Wheels, Body Kit, etc... If you are at fault, the company wont cover your aftermarket parts... If someone else hits you, you can claim the value of the aftermarket parts if you show receipts for the parts damaged...
If you want to insure your aftermarket parts you must show receipts and the cost of your insurance will go up as well...

I am an insurance agent and drive a TT 350z which i have put over 30k into. the adjustor was being cool because all he has to do is bring your car back to stock if you didnt tell them about the mods. most companys are are good about mods that are small and inexpensive but big mods should be mentioned. you dont have to tell them you have a TT but the way my company and most work they just want a dollar amount for the modifications. Tell the company you have 10k in mods and they will charge you maybe 40-50 bucks more every six months. it covers your as$ if you run into a jerk adjustor.

yup, i dumped more than 20k into my last car that was totalled in a headon collision and they would only give KBB value (which wasn't even enough to pay the car off) let alone cover what I had done to it. I called and asked if any of my mods are going to get re-imbursed for when i talked to the guys insurance company and he asked me to send in receipts. with reciepts they cut me a check for $150...which was lame as all hell. so for a $27,000 car with more than $20k in body/audio mods i got a grand total for $14,000....
Mods aren't insured unless you disclose them and add them to your insurance, or if you have an agent who with the receipts will fully reimburse like mine was going to do, but the accident was my fault and he couldn't do.

You have 1 of 2 options(I sell ins in GA) 1 you can tell ur ins company that you have after market products on your car that you would like to insure (Custom Parts or Equipment) and you pay the additional premium (here for like $5000 in cutom parts is like an additional $145 for 6 months) or 2 u can just insure the car for its value, you are not required to tell them about your after market parts, as they (ins company) are not required to pay for anything other than the value of said veh. If you do purchase "Custom Parts or Equipment" Insurance company will need proof of mods. I hope this helps out.

You have to have GAP insurance if you owe more then the car is worth and want it to be paid for...
ie...
Car is worth $14000
You owe $18000 on the loan...
There is a $4000 difference the GAP insurance will cover..

I disclosed my mods to Geico (roughly 25K) following my 25th b-day when my premium went down. They made me pay the difference of $450 for the next 6 months and then sent me a letter 4 months later saying they will no longer insure the car b/c of the mods. WTF? They said the underwriter decided to drop it b/c "the value of the modifications exceeded the Blue Book value of the vehicle". But Progressive covers ALL my mods and knew about them ahead of time.
Also, I don't have all my reciepts so they instructed for me to have pics. Which is easily done.

I heard there's such a thing as "hobby insurance" where USAA will cover your modifications. My rims got stolen and I reported and my Honda was all modded and the adjuster didnt ask anything, that was Allstate. Maybe they think something is shady.
