is always keeping the RPM low bad for the engine in the long run?
I've heard this is true from numerous sources including a former infiniti mechanic. I searched the threads and couldn't find anything on this topic. does anyone know if this is true and if so, why it is so?
like for example if you never get the rpms above 4k after a while it can actually have an adverse effect on the engine.

i dont see why its bad. i assume you have manual as you have more control of rpms, but if you were to drive an automatic, and were to drive at a slow pace, the transmission will shift at 2k all day if you want it to. isn't this called babying the engine?
I believe, if you are accelerating, you're okay! if you upshift, and you are not accelerating, you might be going too slow.

I think about that to beacuse I am really good to this new engine of mine. I get on it everyonce in a while but not so much. I think I am going to get on it just a little more to keep everything in check.
You need to give the engine some gas from time to time. This prevents carbon deposits from building up in the engine. Carbon deposits are bad. Taking your car to 5K or 6K rpms a few times a week is good.
Carbon deposits will form fairly quickly if you drive daily and never get on the engine hard. This will cause reduced gas mileage, poor emissions performance, and of course, reduced horsepower. It could also lead to premature engine wear if you fail to have routine maintenence that would help prevent carbon deposits.

I dont go by RPMs, I go by ear. Its simple, dont lug it, theres a certain frequency that I like to hear in an engine and thats how i determan shift points
I yell at these old timers out here that drive all day under 30 MPH. They wonder why their motors need to be replaced every 18 months.(Burning oil,Massive Carbon build up,fouled plugs, rear seal leaks) Rings, valves, seals all need pressure in order to mantain their Seal. Good motors, weather they be diesel or Gas, like to work. Like people,if they dont work, they get lazy

I always kept my Z above 2500 RPM just because the flywheel noise...
But, if it wasnt for that, I would keep it there anyway to keep the oil pressure up...

It is a must to keep carbon build up down. I used to drive my grandmothers car and I would drive it hard smoke would come out and that wonderful smell from the cats. I think I caused to to break down, on the other hand my mother took her infinity into the shop they due to engine light being on and they quoted her 600.00 to replace sensors, I drove it on the interstate blew it out real good light went off saved her 600.00.

I know I always Wot everytime I take it out. Its good to open it up once in a while to clean the fuel injectors, pumps, etc. Been using Mobil 1 since 3k miles. Right now have 34k and runs like a champ.
