Some systems will deploy the airbag in a less severe collision if you are unbelted v. belted. This would explain only one air bag deploying. In a severe collision, most cars will deploy airbags regardless of seatbelt status.

Funny you mention the coffee cup on the car... i mentioned that I'm glad my car is serving a purpose while it's waiting to be new again. he instantly took his cup off there and appologized... i was being a smart head... heh...

You have to wait till the airbag comes in? the collision center said he already ordered mine, and all the parts are in the mail...

The "one air bag" may refer to front vs. side airbags? The manual may have been covering all their options.

I'm not sure how the airbag systems were designed but for 2004MY and later cars, FMVSS regulations (federal) require airbags to deploy in unbelted occupant situations. It was a stick in our side because if it's the law to wear seat belts in the front seats, then why are we forced by the law to design our car for them. We would probably do it out of due care but still, makes development more complicated. The two stages of deployment are used in unbelted vs. belted cases or in low vs. high speed crashes.

The whole occupant sensor thing still needs to be improved. I think the early designs weren't robust enough so they quietly disappeared. I've heard seat track sensors, weight sensors, etc in designs but they're not foolproof due to all the various things people do in the passenger's seat. :P

Nissan is defnitely liable for the fact that the driver's AB didn't deploy... I'm not saying you should or should not pursue it, just fyi. Manufacturers can design their airbag deploy acceleration thresholds to whatever they need to pass crash tests, but going 35 mph almost certainly exceeds most limits set. Could be a defect in the airbag, electrical connection, or the front crash sensor.

The Z looks good considering it was a 35 mph crash.
