Default Quick questions fellas

Say im in 5th or 6th and i know i have to stop up ahead i usually start hitting the break and then put it neutral to finish the stop. Sound good? I know alot of people talk about downshifting but is my way damaging to the car besides the brakes?

+1. Down shifting not necessary when stopping unless you need to stop quicker than normal

One more thing does it matter when i put it into neutral? Begging of stop or towards the end?

If you hit the clutch and brake at same time, you can leave it in gear until you stop. Just remember to put it in neutral b4 you let go of the clutch

It's not necessary to immediately put it neutral when you hit the brake, but it's a good idea to do as soon as possible. If you hit the break without the clutch and leave your car in gear, it'll bog down the engine and eventually cause the car to shut off. But this doesn't happen until, let's say...you slow down to about 10mph and your still in 5th gear.

You are not damaging the car.

But you have limited control in neutral. I suggest that you learn to use the accelerator and brakes and clutch together for maximum control and performance.

Also remember when braking and going to a lower gear to blip the throttle to reduce tranny wear. Try to match the rpms.

if you brake while in neutral and someones about to hit u and you need to accelerate... well.. unless if you know how to spike your rpm to be able to shift smoother to the rightfull gear you'll be in trouble. But i always just clutch down to N and brake when im in traffic cuz it gets annoying downshifting so much

brake and shift into neutral, if you know for sure that you will be coming to a stop. If not, downshift.

And practice what DavidV suggested.

Cheers,

Again...

Just hit the brakes and clutch to go to neutral before the engine stalls.

If you need to slowdown faster, just push on the brakes harder. Engine braking doesn't help. Concentrate on one pedal, go to the floor if you must.

Don't downshift if you don't have to. I heard people having bent valves cause of downshifting and such.

i dunno I heard many people telling me different things like for example:

When you downshift your RPM revvs higher so like the valves won't close before the piston goes up and blah blah blah. Im not exactly sure what he said but I just heard a lot of people telling me like don't downshift too much and such. but I'm not sure about that one.

To tell you the truth I don't think this will happen much on newer cars though...o.0

That might happen if you downshift to a gear where RPM shoots to 10k rpm.

Keep it below red line and the engine will be fine.

For the average Joe, yes, just hit the brake harder if you desire to stop faster.

For the experienced manual transmission driver, under emergency circumstances, applying the brake and down shifting will effectively slow the vehicle down quicker than applying the brakes alone.
