Default Headlights both cracked!

Has anybody else had this problem? Both my headlights have about 100 small cracks in them that go all the way through the plastic. You can see the problem in these pictures. Look closely.

BTW, my dealer has order replacements and this is covered, no question.

Steve

any idea about what caused this? Nice that the dealer is going to cover them.... I wouldn't think the warranty would apply...

I have absolutely no idea what caused it. Not rocks for sure. The dealer just looked at it for a few minutes and said he would order some headlights.

Default Dealer covering it

I doubt the dealer would cover a broken headlight if there was a rock chip or outright break, but this crackling appears to be a defect in the material or contruction.

If there is no evidence of impact then of course they should cover it. Just my $0.02

I'm seeing the same thing on my lights, but assumed it was rock hits, although you cant see any sign of impact.

thats wierd. certainly sounds like a defect, so it should be covered. thats also a pretty cheap peice i would imagine, so its probably worth it not to make you unhappy.

Ill be keeping an eye on my headlights now.

You'd be surprised at what they would cost over the counter. I'm guessing a few hundred dollars. Maybe the Lexan/Plastic versions are cheaper than the old Z32 style??? Anyone want to call the dealership? =)

Ares If you think around $400.00 per light housing is cheap. That is the order price. Just had 2 replaced.

Could it be the heat from the lights? Maybe there are like micro bubbles of air in the plastic and when the plastic get's too hot, they expand getting larger and more visible.

Were they replaced for the same reason, i.e. cracks out of nowhere?

They look like stress cracks - like some sat on the lens or backed into it slightly

i notice the 3m clear bra on your hood...do you have it on your headlights also? Is it possible it may have caused this? How many miles do you have on your z?

I figured you could raplace the clear cover only, not the whole housing, but maybe they come together. and when I said cheap I meant like 100 each...

Are you applying wax to the lens along with the rest of the car?
It definetly looks like the result of applied pressure from something.

Ive never seen the newer polycarbon lenses do that. You do see it on alot of the early polys from the 80s

There is no 3m on the headlights. The car had 2600 miles when I noticed the problem. I have never used wax on the headlights.

The service manager said it was probably from extended 140mph runs. He thinks it is a manufacturing defect.
