your thoughts on SMG Vs. Stick
hey guys i jsut wanted to ask around about what u guys think on this subject. i mean personally i love having full control of the car with stick but, i love being able to pop that clutch whenever i want. and in some cases it saved me from an accident. just the thought of having full control gives me a piece of mind also makes me feel like a better driver (not needing any machine helping me drive)......but then again SMG is race proven, it shifts faster, harder, smoother. i mean its way faster then and human driver and its perfect everytime. smg vs man. the smg will pull ahead even just by half a car. but i just dotn liek the fact that i dont have that third pedal, to me it feels like a automatic.....even tho it will out perform a stick. what u guys think? smg or stick? what r ur thoughts and opinons?
voted for stick, simply because of the fact that it makes driving more interesting, but you cant deny the technology that is coming out. Sooner or later we are probably all going to have one of many new trannys.
I like auto, just pre-load on da boost side...But I like manual also, auto leaves at a certain # or at least until something is developed handle more power. Or in some cases like Jeremy with Performance factory he's pushin 10.40's in da 1/4 mile with an T-400 (auto trany) / built / TT....(dropped da 6spd. for da auto)....Kinda split between the 2 but I have and auto so...Stickin with it

As far as straight-line street racing goes, I feel that with SMG transmission all you need to do is learn where your best shift points are and flick the paddle at that point. In the manual tranny you have to learn the shift point, then actually execute the shift with your hand and feet. So in a drag race between a MT car and SMG car with equal power/torque at the wheels, it's a car's race and not a driver's race.
That being said, I like my stick shift but wouldn't mind have a fun SMG tranny car as a weekend toy (or maybe the other way around, who knows!)

Stick! Ive had both 5AT and 6MT Z's and the manual owns. Ive driven a couple of M3's also one with SMG one with a 6MT, both were not to my liking, manual felt rubbery and long (not precise) and SMG was wierd. Maybe if I got used to it it would be different?

SMG here. If it's in a M3 it would have to be SMG, it's more refined, and much easier on a track. I've raced quite a few cars in my friends E46 M and SMG just makes it easier to wave at people when i'm flying by them.
well i see where all u getting at BUT SMG just feels too much like tiptronic to me, its like a wanabe stick shift. thats what kills it for me, u know how it is u wake up sunday morning and u feel racy so u hit up the canyons for a few hrs, u hve fun play wiht the shifts, i cnat see how that can be done with smg, plus when ur pissed off havnt u noticed u shift harder and faster lol, u take ur anger out on it lol
Theres a few things that bug me about SMG when I've driven a car with it. With a manual when you pull the shifter (change gears) the change is instant, there is 0 lag, and when you get to the end of the stroke the clutch is out -> the car is moving in the next gear. With SMG, when you use paddles, whatever, there is an ever so slight delay. Maybe its me not being used to it, but I can push my redline a LOT harder with a manual, and I definitely do a better job of gear selection, etc. just because its committed to memory (and position).
I'm voting manual, I like SMG as a technology but am just no comfortable with shifting without control of the shifts.
