Will the 350z be enough for me?
First I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a fan of pretty much all cars and I've had a vast selection of mild to heavily modified vehicles. I'll post the piles I've had over the last couple years at the end. I normally build a new vehicle every 6-12 months as I get bored with them. I guess I'm truely on a quest to find the vehicle that really "fits" me, something I'll have in my blood.
With that said I'm really wondering if the 350z will be enough of a car? I guess I should clarify when I say enough. That really means is this car easy enough to make really fast. Everything I've driven has almost bare minimum 400whp (short of 1 or two vehicles) and I really enjoy the speed. Most vehicles are putting out 500+ chp. I really love the look of the 350 all and all that if offers I'm just worried about easily obtaining the power numbers I'm looking for.
I don't purchase ANY vehicle until I've at least searched its forums for a month and gained all the knowledge I can. I like to know what to look for and the potential that can be achieved with the different modifications offered for that model.
Without a doubt I'll be looking into a TT 350 as the N/A route will never satisfy my hunger for power. I see there are many different turbo kits offered for the Z and the majority seem to go with JWT or Greddy. I'm very familiar with both brands as I've owned two 240sx. I'm just concerned after seeing many dyno charts of ~350-370whp from the TT kits. I'm really hoping this is the base kit with a FMIC but on stock sized exhaust piping and intake setup. I'm also hoping that is on the BS universal tune that gets sent with the kit and opening up the I/E as well as a tune should yield higher results, but how much higher?
I really think I'd be happy with a 420-450whp Z for a while so on top of the standard TT kits out there, what is really needed to achieve these goals? Simple as a few bolt-ons, tune, and upping the boost? Are these levels something you'd feel comfortable driving on every day? Please keep in mind I baby my vehicles and the car will see little friendly street race once a month if I'm lucky. Just having the power on tap for a quick 0-80 or on-ramp is the main reason I modify my vehicles, not to head to the drag strip to try for the fastest time slip or big-dick contests at "RACEWARZ."
Since I live in Ohio I'm also going this year to Mid-Ohio road course and will be taking my vehicle there to show what it has. I'm sure this is really where the 350 would shine as it seems at home on a road course.
Well I guess I've typed enough for one post, and I'm very glad to see this is a really active community and has a strong member base. When I come across a 350zTT that I love, I'll definitely be here very frequently to help contribute as much as possible.
Sorry again for such a long post and thanks for taking the time to read my rambling.
Ok here are the vehicles I've had in the last 2 years or so:
1. 99 Eclipse GS-T (~400whp)

2. 97 GSX (show car I know, rice all out, 380awhp)

3. 90 240sx (SR20DET 396whp)

4. 95 240sx S14.5 (442 whp w/built engine)

5. 2004 GTO (stock)

6. 2001 Mustang GT (478whp Vortech Supercharged)

7. 2000 Audi S4 (318awhp, mildly modded)

8. 2000 Audi S4 (~370awhp once I install my fuel injectors, still have but for sale)

The Z are not comparable to your old cars in regards to bang for the buck in adding horsepower. You have to keep in mind that all your cars (besides two) that you listed were turbo cars, and the other two were large displacement blocks. These result in the ease of adding power. The 350Z is a 3.5L N/A (most of them anyways...
), therefore you would be looking at a considerable amount of money relatively to be able to be in the same hp range as your old cars.
But since I've always loved the Z, and could finally afford one and heavily mod it, I went with it.
At the end, it's all about commitment, desire, and of course, your wallet.
Good luck.

Of course I'm not going to drop 20k on the car but I want to find a pre-turbo'd car as a base and get the hp levels to my liking. I am fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to enjoy my hobby while my wife still sits and home and watches the kid.

I see you have a Greddy TT kit with the HP levels I'm interested in obtaining. How difficult was it to get to 420whp and what cars on the road do you compare it to as it sits?

sid3ways,
it looks like you're doing your homework and that you know a whole lot more than me. with a stock Z I'm no help but I just wanted to compliment you on the S14. it's suhweet!

I guess it's just hard coming from these S4s where it is as simple as upgrading to RS4 turbos, and adding fuel and a tune. 460 crank hp on 91 pump and 525 hp on 105 octane, for an "over-the-counter" tune. That is with 2.7 litres and low compression. Now granted you are running 20psi plus because of these factors and the internals are built for it. I'm on the hunt for a TT 350 that is priced right and fits what I'm looking for. Of all of the vehicles I purchase I generally sell them for the same amount or more than I buy them for.
I've probably paid enough in just taxes on my cars in the last 5 years to build myself a 98' 500whp 240sx show car.
You'll find me scouring the forums gathering as much data as I can and asking some questions here and there.
I do enjoy the thread where the guy came on here and asked where was the best place to get information about a 350z and mods.
Definitely wouldn't want the revolving the payment on a new Viper carfi179. And even if I did my wife would kick my ***.
Check your PM inbox. Also remember, if you want 500whp or higher, then I STRONGLY suggest a motor build.
And it'll cost you around 20k or more to do it right. That said, I'm happy with my puny 400whp stock block car.

welcome to the forum and nice cars,
i would advise you on getting the 07 350z, which have much stronger internals than the previous models. It'll save you a lot of grief of having to rebuild the engine, as it should hold 600whp+ on its stock form.

put it this way, i had a 520 awhp 2g gsx dsm which pwns all of your cars, and i had a 11.7 @ 119mph wrx STi, which again would pwn all your cars. and right now, i'm driving a Z, sure it's not as fast but it's plenty fast as a daily driver so i'm totally happy with it.
pwnz you at 520 awhp
pwnz you at 11.7 at 119mph with a 1.6 60'
and now i got a Z. so there. i hope that answers your questions
