Will Snow Tires Help A Base Z?
#21
well their not like chains......more like cables with washers on them. top speed is 30mph. i was going like 25 mph just to be safe. but my car never fish tailed. i'm in kansas city so for the most part our winters are pretty weak. i figured instead of spending a lot of money for snow tires i would go with the cables. now as far as ice goes....i'm pretty sure these tire cables are useless. i think snow tires would be pretty weak on ice too though. i guess if you are driving on the highway these cables would not be the way to go. but for side streets (35mph-45mph) they will get you around town. just that you can't go over 30mph. i bought them so i wouldn't have to worry about not being able to get to work.

^^ I was asking because I’ve used chains and cables, and I was surprised that cables are still around. In the 70’s the only way to get through mountain passes in Colorado during a storm was using chains (or cables). SUV’s didn’t exist yet (except for Jeep), rear-wheel drive was common, and snow tires were no where near what they are today. When you drove to a ski resort, you brought chains (and often needed to install them). When I had chains mounted, my top speed was 30 mph. Mounting cables allowed me to drive at a higher speed. Of course (and as you point out), chains and cables are not appropriate for dry pavement. --Spike

Yes, I knowingly drive on summer tires. I do this because my wife doesn't need her car every day, so if i know it is going to snow, i can borrow it, but it is not availble all of the time.
I have an '06 and just wanted to feel out the first winter.
