Default Does the gearshift **** simply unscrew?

I have put some pretty good pressure on it, but it does not seem to budge. Is there some special way to remove it?

Just turn it. Mine was originally tight, but after time, I realized one day it would actually twist off.

You might try using a towel to protect it, and break it free with vice grips, channel locks, etc.

people use an adjustable wrench with a towel if its hard to take off by hand. Also, make sure you are turning the correct direction.. Righty Tighty... Lefty Loosey.. here's a visual of what i'm talking about

Well, I tried the strap wrench and a regular wrench. I can rotate the **** about 90 degrees to the left (couter-clockwise) and it just won't come loose.

Later that same day: Finally it came loose, it was really locked on there, I guess they are using locktite to keep it in place. Did some minor damage to the leather and the silver collar, oh well.

No, I like the stock one. I was just gaining access to the center console so that I could move the VDC button up there.

On a side note, all the Z's at the NY auto show still had their shift *****. Normally, anything that is removable is taken out of the car, or else somebody walks away with it.

Of course, I tried playing around with it, but there were way too many people around and I couldn't budge it anyways. Then there was the whole stealing bit.....

Okay, so I'm a 'wimp', but you are all pretty brave to try that.

Don't do it! One of our Z members got a cargo net from the last SF auto show (Z meet) and then totalled his Z later that day

the Nismo instructions state explicitly NOT to take off the shift **** by turning it like you guys recommend. They say you should pull up the cover surrounding the ****, hold that w/ a pair of lock pliers, then twist off the shift **** by wrapping it in radiator hose. That's how I'm gonna do it, don't wanna screw up the shifter that's for sho!

Y'know... funny that it hasn't been mentioned in this thread of thousands like it. Yeah, it's pretty common knowledge that the bottom rod needs to be secured; we've had members that had to find that out the hard way... anyone that needs a PDF d/l of the **** removal instructions, PM me your email address

Doh~ So I tried to remove the **** without securing the bottom rod, and now the whole rod is loose and rotating, the **** is still going nowhere. What should I do now?

Yep, I followed those instructions to a T and they worked out great. I even stuck the electrical tape on my screwdriver head to make sure not to scratch the shifter console.
