Does the gearshift knob simply unscrew?
Just turn it. Mine was originally tight, but after time, I realized one day it would actually twist off.
You might try using a towel to protect it, and break it free with vice grips, channel locks, etc.

people use an adjustable wrench with a towel if its hard to take off by hand. Also, make sure you are turning the correct direction.. Righty Tighty... Lefty Loosey.. here's a visual of what i'm talking about
Well, I tried the strap wrench and a regular wrench. I can rotate the **** about 90 degrees to the left (couter-clockwise) and it just won't come loose.
Later that same day: Finally it came loose, it was really locked on there, I guess they are using locktite to keep it in place. Did some minor damage to the leather and the silver collar, oh well.

On a side note, all the Z's at the NY auto show still had their shift *****. Normally, anything that is removable is taken out of the car, or else somebody walks away with it.
Of course, I tried playing around with it, but there were way too many people around and I couldn't budge it anyways. Then there was the whole stealing bit.....

the Nismo instructions state explicitly NOT to take off the shift **** by turning it like you guys recommend. They say you should pull up the cover surrounding the ****, hold that w/ a pair of lock pliers, then twist off the shift **** by wrapping it in radiator hose. That's how I'm gonna do it, don't wanna screw up the shifter that's for sho!
