You could always go for something like a mid 90's Camaro or later 90's Firebird.
They can be realtively cheap nowadays, and you can still get a nice V8 RWD!

Gas prices and maintenance may eat you alive though, unless you can get one in very good condition (but then it won't be as cheap?)

LS1 = 30mpg (at least Ive been banging down 30+ for the past week).
Maintenence = Tires (unless you can resist)... and oil changes.

I have a 5th gear syncro out but that's my fault for slamming 5th while racing (shouldn't have been going that fast anyways)...

Otherwise I havn't had a single problem.

AE86 with a J2Z swap! It's unique and faster than the Z.

I can't speak for them all! The one I got (93 Z28) wasn't taken very good care of. The engine was great, but the heater core busted, brakes were pretty much toast, etc.

And the huge 6th gear makes highway driving good on the gas... but not so much around town.

And I guess that was an LT1, not an LS1

Very true!..I had a 95 LT1 car (yes your 93 was the LT1 as well)... my 95 had almost everything replaced (including the motor)... It was beat hard most of it's life so it does depend on where you get them from but the LT1 had some gremlins from time to time anyways it seems. Though even with 3.23 gears and an auto it got 26mpg avg going to kentucky and back (1700 mile round trip for me).. not the greatest but not bad.

I've had LS1's and LT1's and neither have given me any trouble at all. GM's improved vastely between just '92 to '95, IMO. Anything after '95 should be a good car.

Has anyone ever looked at the similarity between the hp/torque curves of the 287hp VQ35DE and and LT1?

The only problem I've ever had was dead alternators, BUT... if you get them replaced at a GM dealership with GM parts (and I always do), the new one has a lifetime warranty. It is nice knowing that, after you replace your alternator once, you'll never have to pay for that again. It makes you wanna keep the car even longer.

Those two engines respond very well to the mildest of mods, btw.

Oh yeah... and +1 on the great mileage with the 6M. 2000 rpm's is almost 75 mph and both the Vettes and the Z28/SS's really slice the air. I love those cars.

I've been consdiring selling the Z lately and thought about the BMW 335i or a Saturn Sky Redline if I want to go cheaper. Mainly it would be something to hold me over for another 3-4 years until I can afford a z06 or GTR.

If I wanted something really cheap I'd just pick up a used is300 or something.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a 510 yet.

I don't have a Z, but have joined the forum since I plan on swapping a VQ into my KA24 swapped 510. Hope to use your knowledge to have a nice running & tuned NA VQ in my Datsun.

Upgrade from Z:
LOTUS EXIGE S IN
CHROME ORANGE

Downgrade from Z:
I would probably pick the Nissan Sentra. Because it does look like the cute version of the Z.
