Compression test will determine some causes of excessive oil consumption but not all. I've seen cases where worn rings that caused blow-by allowed normal compression test results due to the presence of oil (and its viscosity) on the cylinder walls during cranking. Other factors include high engine vacuum or negative pressure points that draw oil past seals that measure perfectly under positive pressure or compression tests.
But generally, compression testing is the standard for determining the cause or source of excessive oil consumption.

I have an 06MT and babied it for the first 1200 and at the 2100 mile range...I checked my oil and it was indeed 2 entire quarts low. I'm at 2253 right now and watching it more closely. One thing I must admit is that I never looked at the oil level when I bought it to make sure it was in fact full. So, I'm just in the watching stage right now. If in fact is was full when I bought it, 2 quarts of oil in 1 and 1/2 months seems a little excessive to me!

I have an 06/6mt bought in April of 06 and no oil comsuption yet with 15000 on the OD and I beat on it daily. That is what I got it for. If I wanted to drive nice I would have kept my civic. My dad's 02 WS6 Trans Am burns oil and has since new but never hurt the car with now 102000 on it and he steadily beats on it.

When I had a 85 RX7 that thing would burn couple quarts every 3k miles. I never had to change the oil since it always had fresh oil in it. Only need to change out the filter.
That being said my 06 born date 10 or 11/06 burnt around a quart in the first 3k miles and a 1/4 in the last 1200 not enough for me to care.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 06 manuals all came with the same engine as the 35th Anniv Ed in 2005. And if that is the case, is there any known issues with the 05's consuming oil?

oil consumption resolved
I had problems with oil consumption in the first 7k miles. I was driving it kind of hard, and it was during the summertime. It burned 1 qt every 3k miles. I changed to synthetic and my problem was solved. Make sure you change to synthetic.

2qts 1k hysteria??
truth betold I got mine and had nissan do an oil change right away cause not sure when the first owner did his so I wanted to start off fresh and a few days later had a knock in mine and checked my oil and noticed it was low very low so i thougth they just did not top it off so i did and a week later same thing, then just have became a member searched here and saw i was not alone so I got as much info on it and went back to my dealer they did the consumption test and saw it as a defective motor and replaced it so if its just mas hysteria in some cases but not mine others must have been truthful too maybe not all,but the paper work i have from the dealer shows it is real!! but with the new motor just seems to be a thing of the past! Thanks 350z members for helping my problem to be solved

yet this could be true, but I have a replaced motor with 2510 mile on it and so far everything looks great been checking my oil and it seems to be going in the right derection oil consumption slowing down it went 1qt breakin period 1/2qt next 1k and so far not a drop more after topping it off so I keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best good luck bro with yours hope it works out for you it was atleast worth the try I think but if not then nissan should put in a new motor or buy the car back fair is fair
