I have a stupid question, my father told me not to shift back into first unless I'm not moving at all, 100% complete stop... he said to keep her in second even at like 5pmh. I feel like it's going to die and I'm putting to much stress on it, but today I tried to put it back in first around 5pm and it wouldn't let me like it was locked.
Am I just retarded?

one of the main reason why i DONT go into first gear is because it is harder to rev-match. and being in first gear is very sensitive... how much gas u are putting into the engine reflects greatly how fast you are going. trying cruising around in the parking lot with 1st gear... and then try 2nd gear. jerky in 1st gear huh?
almost always... stay in 2nd gear... even at 2mph... stay at 2nd gear. i know alot of people might disagree on me on this, but when i come to a stop sign, let go off brakes... if i am still moving forward (1mph-2mph), then i go off in 2nd gear also.
and to answer the question about best gear to shift... shifting early around 2k isnt going to help you save gas. here's an example, but u shouldnt be doing this. if you go into 5th gear.. and try to go off from a stop... then u slam on the gas. u'll be acceleration REALLY slow, yet ur MPG meter will say 6-8mpg. u are pouring in alot of gas just to get the engine enough power to move a big *** gear.
it is like comparing to cruising on a slight downhill and an slight uphill with same speed. you are using more gas trying to go uphill because of the gas you are giving to the engine and the stress that's build in the engine.
i found out the best way to save gas city is to use 1st gear and rev close to 4k rpm... shift to 2nd gear... rev to 3k,... shift to 3rd gear... and shift at 2.5 or less every so forth. this method yields me 18-20mpg. dont slam on the gas either to get up to 4krpm... that isnt gonna help ur gas mileage. go up moderately. of course, this depend on circumstances also... that's just a method close to what i use in the city 35mph speed limit. u gotta feel it though.
so the idea is... when u are accelerating... use low gear... and when u are cruising.... use high gear.
you dont want to accelerate in 6th gear while going 40-50mph...
and you dont want to be cruising in 1st gear going 25mph either....
hope this helps

www.howstuffworks.com has a great description of how MT really work.
and as to the original post=), shift at 2500 and accel slowly while car is cold, 3-3.5k normal driving, 4k when im late for work, 6.6k for on-ramps/outrunning Nuclear explosions.
