The 07 I drove felt more similar to my 06 but with more torque down low...making the power delivery very linear. I haven't dragged it but the numbers already prove its quicker.
It's all in the powerband of the vehicle. What may feel fast isn't necessarily quicker....

The clutch feels weak even in comparison to my 04 and is very hard to modulate. Too much effort is required to have a perfect launch simply bc the engagement point is a bit on the high side thus also making it easy to ride the clutch and cause excess wear. The 04 was far from a refined vehicle, however I couldn't tell a difference as far as refinement between my 06 and the 07. The 07 felt just as buzzy when winding down from high rpms's (but nowhere near that of my 04 model) and the brakes felt exactly the same. I have never experienced any type of pinging and even if you do the ECU should have compensated for it eventually.
I somewhat agree with you on power delivery as well. My 04 had gobs of torque initially making it feel like a muscle car but lost all its steam up top. That kinda sucks bc I enjoy opening up my car on the highway. The 06 in turn has the power delivery of a Honda S2000 but on a larger scale with an amazing top end. I agree with the torque loss down low, but far from non existant the way you describe it. I'd rather have my power up top since I rarely ever drive like a maniac in the city.
Personally, I think you had a car that would've been a lemon so kudos on getting rid of it. Whichever way you look at it the 07 is definitely the better car simply from a power delivery standpoint providing both low and top end thrust. Thats where the differences end though IMO...well except for that hump

I also had an '04 that I bought new. When I was looking to trade up, I test drove the '06, then the '07. I went with the '06 cause the '07 wasn't that much better to justify the higher price the stealership was charging. I'm totally happy with my '06.

Two points:
-you would think if Nissan burned you once with your 06, you logically would stay away from buying another Nissan and go with something else
-300 miles is not nearly enough ownership time for the "IT'S CURED!" statements; you're still in the honeymoon phase (like a kid with his new toy on Christmas) so come back in a year and then let's see what happens

Congrats on your new 07! I thought it would be crazy to trade up for one year newer, but damn, your 06 was plaguing you! Good move!
I am really excited about the 07! Time cannot go by fast enough! I had an 03, with all the great problems that go along with them So hopefully by June I finally have an 07, and will see these improvements first hand!

I agree, my 07 is the bomb. I haven't driven an 06 but after driving mine, why would I want too. I waited over 8 months to get an 07 once I heard they were getting the new engine. He is right about the torque thing. I haven't taken it above 4K and it still seems to effortlessly pull in any gear, even 6th on the highway, very responsive. I routinely forget to upshift also. The transmission on mine is extremenly smooth, I still get a little bob from 1-2 but thats just user error.
Frickin weather men said it was going to rain and maybe snow today so I left her at home, I'm pissed as it looks beautiful outside!

As far as buying something else... I couldn't do it. I love the Z. i love the exterior and the interior. It's a very well-balanced sports car and while it is a tad on the heavy side, How many F'ed-up, wrecked Zs do you see and the driver walks away or lives. Pretty damn impressive from a safety standpoint if you ask me.
Nissan left a lot of room for mods... how huge are those rear fender wells? i mean, a 245 stock tire fits in there... as does a 285, 295, 305... Kick-***! There's a huge aftermarket for the car.
I also love the 6-cyl engine (I think my particular 06 was a POS. at least the enine/drivetrain). V-8's are fast, sure, but where's the challenge in that... it's a V-8. Put one in a small car and it'll be fast. It also gets decent gas mileage. If I hada vette or a 335i (turbo), no doubt I'd be getting like 12 MPG around town. But the Z gives me a decent 20 MPG. I am just stuck on the Z.
Plus, I like Z owners. They are really cool. A group of people who appreciate a balance between form and function. They don't have to have the fastest car. I drove a C6 vette and did not like the interior... Kinda ugly and no lateral support in the seats. The EVO's are sure fast and handle well, but they are really not a particularly nice-looking car (same with the STI). (I still think they are bad-***, just not for me) Porsche drivers seem a little stuck up. Mustangs are nice, but are set up for a straight line. The elise would be great, but it would rattle my fillings out on anything but a smooth track. The e46 M3 is nice, but you sit completely upright in it rather than laid-back.
I did not mean to 06-bash. They are all awesome cars. Mine just had some flaws. Also, I am overly-critical of everything.
I think the Z is the perfect sports-car.
