How strong are our windshields?

I was doing about 85 overtaking a big rig on the freeway. Since it was towing the worlds biggest, dirtiest bulldozer on the flatbed trailer, I thought about just falling in waaay behind it since my exit was coming up and not risk the chance of rocks but went around him anyway.
Bad idea.
I could not believe how hard the windsheild must have been hit judging by the sound. I would have thought the thing would have shattered. When I went to look, I fully excpected to see at least one or two huge cracks and or chips. Barely anything noticable at all.
However my hood near the windsheild wasn't so lucky. It has a 3/4" scratch that is GOUGED all the way to the metal, like it was scribed in with a scratch awl as hard as somebody could press, without warping the metal
Last time I had a scratch that bugged me, I spent about $800 dressing up the engine bay
I'm working on filling in the scratch and it will look better but has anybody had their windsheild shatter into millions of pieces, if so what caused it.
This rock had to have had more impact energy than a 600 FPS .177 pelet gun.

wow you are lucky. I think your hood absorbed most of the energy. Otherwise I think your windshield would crack.
4 yeras ago a small rock hit my maxima and left a small crater in my windshield. Its still there
but the windshield is OK.

Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter in small, square pieces when broken. side windows and rear window are tempered
