My SoCal experience has been rather different than most of the members posting on this thread.
When I initially purchased my UY (Ultra Yellow) 350Z back in December 2004, I personally thought that there was too many Z's running around to have anyone really care what a 350Z was. However, I thought it might be a nice chick magnet.
For, the past couple of years, I had nothing but compliments of having a 350Z. From family, friends, random strangers, random car enthusiasts, clients, co-workers, bosses, etc. The number one compliment I received the most was the color which brings out the Z. Till this day, I can drive my Z around and people are still staring at me (At first, I wasn't confortable driving a yellow car - it's not quite my personality).
One of the topics I really don't see on the forums if owning a 350Z had an impact on anyone's life. Ever since I owned my 350Z, I have been steadly getting a better paying position throughout my 2 years of ownership (granted I'm a CPA). During my ownership I met with alot of clients and various high level executives, and they love the look of the 350Z and the color (most of them are not into cars and have no idea what it is). L.A. is rather superficial when it comes to image, although the Z is considered "all show and no go" among car enthusiast, the "all show" part is where the Z shines the most. As superficial it may sound, I somewhat believe my UY Z had some part in selling an image to advance my career (since I have to drive to clients, they always know which car sticks out like a sore thumb).
Of course like all good things, there is always a fault. As I mentioned, I thought my Z was going to be a chick magnet. I can firmly tell you, it hasn't benefited me one bit. However, I got alot of guy's complimenting at least (sometimes their girl friends are rolling their eyes). I asked one of my long term friends how does she perceive me driving a UY 350Z. She answered "a superficial guy with money."
At least the Z is hot (disclaimer: this is my experience driving a UY in Socal).

i dont get compliments i live in a part redneck and other part rich area. so either the rednecks are calling it a girls car and tell me to get a real car with a v8 or the rich people are driving $100,000+ so they dont care.

lol i parked the car the other day with my girlfriend in the car, and i got out cuz i usually run around to open the door for her (yeah i know i'm whooped), but as i was getting outta my side and closed the door, a girl and her boyfriend walked past my car and she looked at me and was like "wow ... nice car ", and her boyfriend just starred me down as they kept walking. it was quite funny i started walking to the restaurant and turned around hella quick and almost fell down cuz i totally forgot about opening my gf's side of the door. LOL.

I got many compliments when I had the Z convertible. I got a few compliments yesterday and today after I waxed the hardtop. I actually got a thumbs up from my neighbor who doesn't even care about cars.
