I know i'm gonna get jumped on for this. But honestly, if you care about your son, you will buy him a beater. Or at least something more tame. I thouhgt the OP was making a joke, but sadly he's serious. I "appeared" to be a safe and responsible driver to my parents too. But as soon as i was outta site, i probably broke every driving law there was, and some how lived to talk about it. And that was in a beat up sentra. A Z is a loaded gun to a 17 year old. I wish no harm to him, but i will be waiting for the, "i totaled my Z" post.

On the way down we're going to drive another Z, WRX, Acura CL and BMW 328 CI. Luckily a couple of the cars are in Pueblo and we can drive them when were not driving or having to work a corner. I'll have to see if we can find a Scion down there.
Giving a kid a car, spending to much for it or not having to work for it don't concern me. Only you or I know your child. Thanks for the replies.

I got my Z when I was 17 and I didn't crash. As long as he goes to the track often, he should be fine, let him do his speeding there.
Your son is lucky though, I have to reimburse my Dad $1000/month for mine

If you want your son to track the Z, i would get a Base model and upgrade It's the cheapest route, and you don't have to deal with the traction control/vehicle dynamic control electronics to get in the way, and your son can learn how to tinker with it when you add an After market brake upgrade ($2500) and a limited slip ($1000), which would put it in a class comparable to a stock 03 track for less money.
But with the types of cars in your garage, i dont see him keeping the Z too long
side note:Ken better get the biggest Father's day card, ever.
Seems way cool for a Dad.

Its not buying the car like its NOTHING, someone is spending the money so it IS something and I'm sure the kid will appreciate it or lose it simple as that
My recommendations are to check any Z for oil consumption/tire feathering problems as you will want to avoid those, other than that shop around for what you BOTH want and do kbb comparisons of private/trade in to neg.

Hey Ken,
The poster above hit it right on the head! If an 03 or 04 is what you want to get him, then make sure you have the car checked for tire feathering issues first and foremost! Oh and get at least an enthusiast so you have TCS at least. Comes in handy and can save your/his life.
Peace!

Same idea goes for your son. Buy him a beater...let him learn how to drive, and once he gets a year or two of actual driving experience (autocross doesn't mean $hit), then buy him something with more than 200 horsepower.

Ken, I personally would say buy your son a Z with the upper spec options, with either TCS or VDC. He's still young, lots to learn, that TCS or VDC, might just save him if manages to get into a tricky situation, spurred or on my peer pressure. I'm sure you're thinking of some of the silly things you probably did at your sons age.
Good luck and let us know what you end up buying for your son.

280 ish hp is pretty fast for a person just starting to drive, but since your son has been driving pretty nice cars already im sure he will do fine. I'm 19 now but i was 18 when i bought my 2003 Track Model. I saved and worked at a resturaunt up until i had a 10,000k down payment and then my parents chipped in 2k. I got a REALLY good deal on my car, $18,800 with less then 20,000k miles on the car. The guy had it on lease. just look around for things like that because people will always want to try to make a little rather than trading their cars back in and getting nothing on a lease.

i had alot of experince driving my dads bmws( m3, 7 series, and ci ) because they were my dads cars i drove em carefully, i got a gti when i turned 17 and had my license sespended for 2 years within the first 6 months of owning that car... it was only a gti... i think i would have been in alot more trouble if that car was a z... although im still a pretty agressive driver im glad it took my till i was 21 to get a z

17 year old boys are 17 year old boys. IMHO they should be taking the bus or borrowing a beater ford taurus they fill with gas.

If my family can more then afford to put me through law school. I only hope I can be in the same financial position to put my children through college. I have some friends that are having to pay for all of there own college and take out multiple multiple loans. The stress alone that that puts on them is terrible. I feel terrible and would hope my children aren't in that position. I have been blessed with not having to pay for my schooling and I am more then grateful for it.

I'm 17 and have a Z. No tickets or accidents here. If you can trust that he'll make smart choices behind the wheel buy him one.
Oh yeah get at least an enthusiast trim for TCS, which saved my *** a couple times, b/c I wasn't to familiar with RWD.
