Everytime I drive moderately hard. I notice some kind of burning smell. Is this normal? What is this?

It's just the new engine and parts breaking in and even later you'll get that smell. I get it occasionally but not very often on my 03 with less than 27K

I get it and I swear it is the smell of diff fluid. It seems to happen when I accelerate hard. I thought that I might of overfilled the diff, but that has not fixed it. If you look there is a breather tube out of the diff and it basically drains right near the muffler.

When I push my car near redline I get the burning smell. I have an appt tomorrow at 8AM to have them take a look. I'll let you know.

I had another Z owner tell me it smells like burning oil and that he had a cheap & faulty gasket valve or something. We'll see tomorrow....

edit: I just hit 15,000 miles on my 03.

Those are new headers burning in. the ceramic is what you're smelling. Don't worry about it.

I get a burning smell when I romp on it a bit. I know I run rich from the carbon buildup on the pipes but it does smell a bit destructive. When breaking in a new motor you get a metalic burn smell, its a bit cleaner smelling than a burning clutch smell. Its not that smell.

The closest I can compair the smell to is what its like after you have a sloppy oilchange but a little more metalic. Its almost always after hard acceleration through a few gears. I try to ignor it but sometimes its down right sufficating when your forced to stop soon after.

Sorry to sound so vauge but after reading some of the other threads it could be the same thing and I only have 7.5k miles.

You won't believe this. I took my car in and here's what they said:

"Everything looks normal" (they always say that! ). "But we did find some remnants of a plastic bag melted near/on/around your exhaust. We cleaned that off and if the smell comes back after the rest of it burns off, bring the car back."

I've been getting on it pretty good since getting the car back and although I can kinda smell something at WOT...the smell is basically gone. After a hard run, when I used to park, the smell was hold-your-nose STRONG. Now, I don't get any smell when I park.

I could have sworn this was burning oil or the like. They either fixed that and B.S.'d me about the plastic bag or...I dunno. If I goose it and can then smell the smell IN the car while doing 70mph...can it really be something on my exhaust?

Get under your car and look at your exhaust. They could be right. It sounds possible.

Steve-
Get under your car with a blowtorch and burn the rest of the plastic bag off. I'll watch.(and hold the extinguisher) We should probably park on a boat ramp, just in case.

Don't make me bring up some snide remarks about exhaust smoke!

Actually, I think I'm good now. At lunch I took her out for a spirited ride on the local freeway onramps and didn't smell anything. Not even when parked afterwards.

And maybe it was just the day away from the car, but I swear it drove superbly today. I didn't want to come back to the office....

Steve-
That's great! My smoke problem is also fixed. Now, they're re-doing some of my install work and adding a few things. Should be done in time for the big Z get-together on the 18th. There are over 100 people signed-up. I'd love to be able to fly down, attend the meet, and drive home up the coast. If you wanted to attend, we could drive down in your car and caravan home? You'd miss work Monday.
