Default fuel consumption and gas guage/tank question...

I'm noticed today that while driving out of my neighborhood (1st and 2nd gear) that my gas guage dropped by about 1/8th. Is it possible to burn 2+ gallons driving only 1 or 2 miles???? The computer shows I'm burning around 22 miles per gallon, so I'm baffled by this. I'm a little rough since I'm new to driving stick, so that might have something to do with it,

Also, I know that 350Zs (I have a 03 Track) have 20 gallon gas tanks....but it seems like it's really around 18 gallons. On a tank that's 1/4 full according to the guage, I can only put about 13 gallons into it....

Have you guys noticed anything weird with your guages?

Thanks!

I got it up to 39.5 mpg yesterday! It very quickly dropped down and averaged out around 34 though. Sometimes it pays to drive like an old woman.

I somehow was able to put 21 Gallons in a 20 gallon tank. I didnt add any after the hose clicked off. It just stopped and I saw that I had put 21 gallons in. Now thats weird. And it seem to mess up the DTE gauge. Its back on track now. I usually get about 440-450 miles to a tank.

Default Gas Gauge

Yup been there sounds like it's a floot issue. The 350z have two of them one in each tank. took my 04 in for this issue. I would try to top her off the the gauge would read 1/2 tank. the first attempt was done at the Nissan dealer ship where they replaced a check valve that goes in the tank.Next day while driving I was down to 1/4 of a tank and car just stop. yup out of gas.. Boy was I pissed, got on the horn with the nissan dealership and vented for 1/2 hour. Sometime this works. they asked that I bring in the car the next day. wow I Pulled into dealership and to my supprise they had a rental ready for me turn's out it was the floot. looking ok now.

i think so too. I have never put over 15 gallons in my Z and the needle made it look like I was really low. I doubt you got an oversize tank.

Its possible. I usually fill it when the tank gets to about 15 DTE. I can get about 18.5 in at that time Maybe a little more. But when ran to empty on that day it held almost 21. Maybe a little shy. I will see what happens today. Its almost to empty.

20 gallons, 3 of it is reserve... several WELL DOCUMENTED issues with the fuel system on the earlier Z's... use the search engine.

Yup, my gas guage is completely messed up! after fully filling it up, my "empty" sign lights up just after 140 miles! I'm scared to take it past 310 miles, afraid I might run out of gas. Sometimes after completely filling up, the tank reads 3/4s (never more) then sometimes its 1/2. After driving for 20 miles, it'll fall to 0! and then back up to 3/4s. Totally jacked! and I'm out of warranty. Anyone know how much it'll cost to fix this?

I shift at 3k rpm, and normally get 350 miles with 5 gallons reserved left.

Its a 20 gallon tank!

If you only get 17.5 MPG, you would get 350 miles to a tank.

What does you fuel usage calculator/display say?

I just fill when the light goes on , usually 15 gallons. For the one who put in 20 , time to look that station up at BBB .

I read some of the earlier threads related to this issue, and I found this interesting fact:

Apparently, the fuel gauge and the DTE display only covers 17 gallons. When the fuel gauge hits 'E' and the DTE display hits '---', there's still 3 gallons left as a reserve.

It makes sense, since this would explain why my gas fill-ups always add up to 17 or 18 gallons as opposed to 20. Does anyone dispute this?
