When do you shift to 2nd from a dead stop?

isnt doing burnout in 2nd bad for both the tranny and engine at the begining? It seems like there would be a lot of load initially before the wheels break traction and start spinning. Do you do burnout on some water to brake traction first?
As for rough 1 > 2 shift, after driving for over two years, I find that not forcing the shifter to second right away, as well as blipping the throttle a little before releasing the clutch, is the smoothes method. Or you can change to a lightweight clutch disc/flywheel setup. I've read many times that ATS (Carbonetics clutch) does wonder in smoothing out rough shifting, because of its lightweight carbon disc.

He admitted he was new to driving a standard. To the OP, in normal driving somewhere around 3,000 is good. Start giving it a little bit of gas as the clutch is almost all the way out to keep it from clunking in between gears.
If you want a super smooth shift, you want to shift early into 2nd. Shift into 2nd gear between 7-10 mph, it should be pretty smooth.
This is how I shift usually:
1st to 2nd: by 3k rpms (I don't remember the speed ..I just shift when it feels right)
2nd to 3rd: at 30 mph
3rd to 4th: at 40 mph
4th to 5th: at 50 mph (see a pattern ?
)
5th to 6th: at 60 mph

)5th to 6th: at 60 mph
some of us need to shift a bit quicker then @ the speeds you posted below.
