Im 6 2 and i love those knee pads. Without them my knee would be scraped from that joint. Also the driver seat is seperated down the center so it forces your legs apart. Im such a **** :-D
The knee pads help in side impact accidents also, if you have ever been hit from the side in a small sports car, your knees probably banged against the steering column, the middle console or both.
in my old S2000, on track days, I wore wrestling new pads to prevent massive bruising on the outside of my knees . That is one reason I purchased a 350z...more room! and built in pads

When I was watching the F1 race on sunday, they showed Felipe Massa getting ready to climb into his car, and he put one knee pad on (pad facing the other knee)...I guess with the quick combination of 4g+ turns that F1 cars are capable of your knees need a little padding.
You should have seen all the $h!t talk I got on Elisetalk for defending the use of knee pads in the car when your knees get banged up on the side sill at the track. In the Elise, your left leg is right against the side sill, so it'll rub the side of the knee raw after a few sessions. Some one on that forum asked if it'd look silly to wear a knee pad, and everyone came down on him with endless bj jokes.
I even brought up the fact that racers use them, but they wouldn't hear of it.
