I'm waiting to buy a Consumer DVD Recorder when the price drops a bit and they incorporate Tivo recording technology into it. From what i've read, this should happen in the not to distant future. Consumer DVD Recorders are already out but cost in the $800+ range.
Say goodbye to VCR!

You will be waiting a VERY VERY long time. It is highly unlikely there will be a TiVo built into a DVD recorder for quite some time. My guess would be 5-10 years. You can blame this on the recording industry as well as the networks who fear we will "steal" movies and progamming.
By the way, you can get a TiVo from $99 to $399 depending on the model. It is NOT getting any cheaper than this!
Buy One Here:

Note: If you have DirecTV I HIGHLY recommend you get the TiVo with DirecTV model. Also note, a new model of the TiVo w/DirecTV is coming out this fall! Details here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...threadid=59215

FYI:
Tivo is not a permanent recording solution. Tivo records onto a hard drive. You have a limited capacity on that hard drive and then you must start erasing previously recorded material to record anything new.
What i'm talking about is a permanent recording solution. With the hybrid players coming out in the months ahead, you will have a system that combines a hard drive and Tivo programming/recording software AND the ability to permanently record a program on a DVD with no degradation in quality.
Obviously, this solution is far superior to that offered by today's Tivo and VCR duo.

You can currently record TiVo progams onto S-VHS tapes (or plain VHS). The quality is Good to excellent.
Also, most people record a show or movie with TiVo, watch it, and delete it without wanting to "keep" it. For those times when I want to save something, I transfer onto S-VHS. Sure, it would be great if I could put it on a DVD. But that's not happening for a while.

You are overly pessimistic. The issues holding up Consumer DVD records have been resolved enough so the big manufacturers are now releasing models. Whether you record from a Tivo to a DVD or direct (live) from cable, etc., makes no difference. The content providers don't like the idea of a DVD recorder, period. They will just have to get used to it!
Here is an example of an upcoming Consumer DVD Recorder with the features i have mentioned (save for the Tivo programming software) that is coming out in October. It also uses a hard drive to store material that people do not want to store permanently. Also, Tivo has been losing money. They are transitioning into licensing as a profit model for the future. They have licensed Tivo to Sony and Toshiba, according to the second link article, for a variety of digital consumer products including DVD recorders. Finally, the last link represents another hybrid product that competes with Tivo.

Your 5-10 year time horizon has evaporated. I suggest you read up on the consumer DVD recorder developments. Things are really happening!

A decent alternative to TiVO: if you have DISH network satellite service, you can get their PVR 501 receiver, which has TiVO-like functionality. It was primitive and buggy at first, but it gets regular automatic software updates and it's getting pretty good now. (Soon there will be the two-tuner model 721 so you can watch one thing while recording another.)
