I finished installing my FM modulator today and also did some clean up so that the external DVD in the mailbox slot fit in there front to back instead of side to side like I had it.
To get into the dash, I did the procedures outlined before by Scafremon. I wired up an inline toggle switch in the red wire that powers the FM modulator.
Here is the problem. There is a white plastic box under the head unit. It is about 8 inches long, 4 inches wide and maybe an inch thick. In the back of it are three wire harness plugs. In the front of it is a white ribbon wire (like you'd see inside a computer) that leaves the white box and goes forward into the back of the three climate control *****.
In order to get in there you have to unplug this ribbon from the three *****. I had it disconnected during the install. When it is disconnected and you turn the key you sort of get a "default" setting and the defroster runs full blast at a hot temp. I know this because last week it did so but when it was plugged back in, the three control ***** worked again. BUT, this time, when I plugged the white ribbon in again when I was done...NOTHING! It was like I didn't plug them in at all since the little yellow lights don't light inside the three *****, and I am getting the "default" full blast defroster.
I checked all the fuses and they seem OK. In order to drive the car without heated defrost, I had to pull out one of the plugs from the back of the WHITE BOX. As I said, there are three of them. If I pull either of the two smaller ones on the right of the white box (right, if you are looking at them as the box sits in the dash) I get a CES light, VDC light, basically EVERY light on the dash lights AND I lose my digital speedo and the beeping from the key being in the ignition too. If I only unplug the one larger plug from the left of the white box, it kills the defroster and my dash lights all seem OK. Of course I have no AC or anything now.
I am baffled here. I don't know what I did. Does anyone know what this white box is? It seems pretty important and seems to control a lot of stuff! I took it apart and there is basically a circuit board that kind of looks like a more complicated version of the back of the Xenarc video monitor. No pins seemed bent or out of alignment. I also took apart the little control box that contains the three climate control ***** and again, nothing seemed wrong (to the naked eye anyway).
I don't know if it's a problem with the white box, the ribbon wire, or the box behind the three *****.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to put out all the details to see if anyone would know what to do.
Thanks.
