This debate reminds me of the 6MT v. 5AT debate that's been going on here for years. It all seems rather pointless; we bought the car we bought for whatever our personal reasons/modification plans/ may have been.
To continue insulting/belittling language like the ZR is for girls is just plain infantile and contributes nothing.
I own an '04 SB ZR w/virtually every engine mod, excluding headers, cams and F/I, but including major suspension/wheel and tire mods. What I know is that every morning, I look forward to driving my car, and here in Southern AZ, this is top down prime time.
My advice is to buy the car that most appeals to you, and which conforms to your plans for the car. Will you drag race? Will you street race? Will you go F/I? Or do you want a car that will be your DD and w/ a few mods will be more exciting and faster than most production cars you will encounter?

of all the forums i go to this (and the bmw forums ) are the only ones to create a fking flame war of every single simple subject.
Like everyone says if you like the styling of the ZR and aren't a autocross, racetrack hardcore driver, then the performance and handling or both cars is subjective and negligible once including how much most people suck at driving. I personally don't like the look of the ZR although i'll never say it's ugly, so i chose the nicer *to me* coupe. If you want top down sexiness and handling s2000 is the way to go.

I looked at both and picked the ZR and the vortech love it . I have decided to keep it for a long time . In a couple years instead of buying a new car get the engine built along with new paint and wheels. We love the top down even on cool days just turn up the heated seats . But for the same amount of $$$ you could get the coupe and put lots of mods on it but it still will not be a roadster

A bigger price tag? It's probably just due to the equipment to 'drop the top' which they sold to you for an outrageous premium.
All of these 'negatives' for a larger sticker price. Yeah, nice. I'll take one of thsoe.

Personally, I don't think it is a pointless debate as there are many hard facts to consider despite the personal preferences.
All previous generation Z's, even during the times of Datsun, were hard tops. The closest they ever came to full convertibles, I believe, were in the 300zx T-tops. My Brother has one.
They SHOULD'VE continued the line that way retaining a solid roofline to keep with the heritage of the car. If you want to feel the sun in your face or hair, then use a t-top but not something that RUINS the classical and BEAUTIFUL lines of the Z's profile.
When I was looking at the Z to purchase, the first thing that caught my eye in the profile was the design of the roof in reference to the rest of the car. Take away that roof and you take away 90% of what the Z has to aesthetically offer from it's profile.
Add to the fact the other negative factors that come with a roadster and it just seems like a lose-lose situation for me.
