I noticed the inventory at my local Nissan dealer hasn't been restocked the last month or so. 2004's must be on the way!

samw1978,

They let you order a 2004? Everyone around here is telling me I have to wait till September to order a 2004! How did you pull that off??

k2we,
What do those numbers mean??

Thanks!

What do those numbers mean??
Those are the sequential production numbers. Nissan was supposed to run 30,000 car for North America for the 2003 model year. 16xxx would mean they are REAL close to that figure...

(If you're wondering how 16000 is close to 30000, there are TWO sets of sequential numbers, one set with side air bags, on without)

IF you sell 1/2 with side air and 1/2 with out... 16K x 2 = 32,000...

2004 should be here soon if the numbers are any indication.

I used to think that there were 2 sets of sequential numbers but I'm not so sure.. I have yet to see any identical last VIN numbers for cars with side air bags & without.. My VIN end with T001890 and I have side air bags. The car woth the same last 5 not having side air bags would be T101890. Does anyone have this VIN number or does anyone on the list know of or have seen an identical last 5 digit VIN??

For those that didn't know, VIN numbers starting with 0 have side air bags, VIN numbers starting with 1 do not have side airbags.

Can anyone shed light on this subject??

I'm also curious what the VIN numbers are for our friends who have right hand drive models. Do these come off the same assembly line as our left hand drive models come from. I wonder if anyone in Japan or Australia might care to give us your last 6 starting with the letter and then the 5 numbers.. I know the letter T denotes the car was made in the Oppama plant in Japan. Thanks in advance,,

I too have have completed the preordering process for an 04. September is the earliest date my car will arrive. Late October being the latest (according to the dealer). There are even some preorders before me! My theory is that only certain dealers get the approval to take orders before other dealers. You just have to visit the right one. Put 1000$ down with no specs as of yet. Although the manager said price would only increase $600-800 on new models, seems fair enough.

skewba_steve,

Thanks for the info on your pre-order. I can't get any dealers around me here in Charlotte NC to do a pre-order. They keep saying that it will be september before they can even order it.

Here's my questions:
Who's the dealer your buying from?
Did you tell him exactly what you wanted - Ie Enthusiast Silverstone w/areo?
Who's your salesman?

Thanks! I'm lost here in Charlotte!

I can't remember if it was here or over on zcar.com, but way back when cars first started arriving last fall I thought we had concluded (with supporting evidence) that the VIN numbers did not repeat between side air bag and non-side air bag cars.

It seems like the VIN numbers were plainly in sequence with only the side air bag digit changing as the count went up.

Oh, and for the record, we have two dealerships locally that have no Zs on the lot for the past 2 or 3 weeks...

Sprint302,
The dealer I went to was Bill Seidle's Nissan in Miami (metro area), yes me and the dealer sat down and worked out everything (options, model, color, etc). The sales person's name I spoke with was Lenard, nice guy too. I'm guessing your dealer in Charlotte probably just won't go the extra mile to contact Nissan to approve of going with 04 preorders, I would try scouting around a bit. Hope this helps

There are pre-orders, and then there are orders.

I get two different stories from 2 different dealers here in Dallas. One says they will take the order now, one will not. The one that will not says that the first couple of batches of '04 Z's they get will be allocated by Nissan, with no ability to control models or options. They get what they get. They say they will not be able to place a 'custom' order until September, for a December/January delivery. I believe them.

I think the dealers that are taking 'orders' for '04 models are just holding your $1000 and putting you in a queue for when they can order. That date is unknown at this time.

The theory that certain dealers are allowed to take pre-orders while others are not is wrong. There are certain dealers who will take your $1000 and sit on it. Other dealers will not take your $1000 until they write an official order for the '04, which none can do right now. None of the dealers know what the pricing changes are, what option/color or whatever changes are. How can you even think a dealer is placing an '04 order now?

Your $1000 puts you in a queue to order (hopefully). They cannot tell you when the car will arrive, because they don't even know when they can order one officially. Any dealer that tells you a custom order will arrive Sept/October is GUESSING.
