350Z a dirty word? (CA DMV thinks so)
I just got back from the DMV to try to reserve my custom plate. "MY 350Z" was still available so I went for it. It was rejected due to "unacceptable word". I tried several other variations and anything with "350Z" in it was rejected. The ladies at the DMV couldn't think of any reason why this might be so except that somehow for some reason someone might find it offensive. So I ended up getting "03 Z" which is apparently OK.
This is very strange.
Has anyone else tried to get a 350Z-related plate in California?

Not sure why they would say that... I cant think of anything offensive about it.

I have used the California web site to search for possible configurations several times in the past. Each time I was able to get the plate I wanted if the website confirmed the availability. I am surprised you can't get "My 350Z" since the copmputer says it's available.
The web site tells you if it's available, meaning nobody else has got it. I checked that it was available, and the DMV office also showed this. The web site also checks for invalid configurations (combination and order of letters/number) for the type of plate. But the DMV office seems to do others tests like the "unacceptable word" test, which is what it failed. I have a feeling that the reason "MY 350Z" was still available (an obvious one for Z owners in CA) was because others had run into the same problem. I was wondering if anyone on this site had run into it.
And showing them a page from the web doesn't do s*#it, because if the system does not accept it there's nothing they can do. They said I could pay the fee and they could submit it with a "statement of facts" to basically appeal to the head office, but there's no guarantee I would get it. (Which probably means no way, no how.) So I went for another combination.

I wonder if there's a site like that here in TX? I tried looking it up like this... http://plates.tx.gov/search/ but it didn't work. Just wondering if I could find out what's still available here in TX. Anyone know anything on this matter?
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to just find out the old fashion way..... Go down to the DMV or call. I'll have to come up with 6 cool 350Z tag names first. Any ideas? Hopefully one of them will still be available here in TX.

There's quite a list.
I too tried to get that plate in CA (My 350Z) about a month ago. They said the plate was no problem, but the fact I didn't have a car (and corresponding VIN) was a major issue... When I asked the lady at the DMV to explain how I could get the plate, she broke off an irritated lecture on how to do it (which prompted me to cut her off half way) and I turned around and bailed.
Good Luck if you can get it done.

That's strange. For me it was no problem getting the plate without the car. They said they'll contact me when it arrives and if I don't have the car yet I can have them put it aside until I'm ready. But the system would definitely not accept "MY 350Z" or anything like it even though they hadn't been used by anyone else. Sounds like the DMV is messed up (big surprise!)

We definitely have some problems here in Cali. Sometimes it seems like the PRC stands for the People's Republic of California. I say: pay the fee and try for the dispensation. If I know government workers they'll see you're serious, take the path of least resistance, and grant the plate.

I don't think I'll be lucky enough to snag 'my350Z' tag here in TX. I'm sure there will be a car dealer who has access to the vin numbers (1st) who will get that one.. I have six tags picked. I'll start at the top of my list and see what's left.... Still can't wait for the car to show up. Come on Aug.!!!
