Default an update on the situation

for those that havent noticed(and apparently dont surf here often) and those that have.

there have been some pretty serious issues with posts being lost, counts not updating, ect.

the Staff here does not currently know whats going on, I believe attempts have been made to contact takeo; but since its still having problems, this has obviously not worked thusfar.

we recieved a tip that this could be a result of "bots" which is basicly a automated user with a single purpose, to use up all the bandwidth it can, and thus, keept the server from running smoothly. since we have a general idea of when this occured, action has been taken. this leads to the last point of info.

just now I have banned about 50 users, this was ANYONE that registered on June 9th and still has 0 posts. This is not an IP ban, I know that I just banned some very nice people, and I do not mean any offense by this. you are welcome to sign up again but a new name will be needed. again Im sorry, but after a few days of problems and no fix, had to try some long shots.

I do not know if this has worked yet, and I may very well ban all user who signed up on the 8th as well. just trying to solve this problem as quickly as possible.

thank you for all your patience
the staff of my350z.com

I suggest you contact the server admin and find out if there is a June 7, 2003 back up of the db table and restore from there. And, find out how to prevent future illegal access.

Yeah, that would solve the problem of deleting a table...Good thinking

Why do you keep pushing Oracle? At my company we use MySQL for many extensive, extremely heavily-used databases and we have zero troubles. I don't believe there is inherently anything wrong with using MySQL to run this site, as long as it is managed and administered well.

Oracle would certainly work fine, but don't you feel it would be a bit overkill? Oracle is a *hugely* expensive application, while MySQL is free. And what about PostgreSQL? Free, transactional, would probably work as good as Oracle for this site. Additionally, the new versions of MySQL support transactions, too.

I've chatted with our db admins about this site and the problems, and they see no reason at all why MySQL wouldn't be able to handle it just fine. They did recommend that the admins of this site perhaps look at the newer versions of MySQL, as they allow much better control of certain aspects of the db, factors which might be set up incorrectly for this site's usage patterns.

I highly doubt that MySQL is the problem here.

Despite my income coming exclusively from Oracle's existence, I would have to wonder how popular a message board run on an Oracle database would be. You'd need about 99% of the page to be advertisements to cover the licensing costs.

Yeah, if it is a hack, it's most likely some hole in the vB software that exposed it. Maybe nobody has been keeping the software up to date, but I don't keep my site updated either. MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle aren't going to change that.

This is by far the best Z site on the web. I hope these issues are resolved soon, it would be terrible if many of the members stopped coming here because of frustration and inability to post, etc).

best of luck

Oracle is definitely a good program but like everyone else said isn't necessary for a site like this. Check out MySQL to see just how well it runs compared to Oracle. I know it doesn't have the same abilities but they're being built in piece by piece. Hmm.. maybe when the site has 80,000 users posting on average of 320,000 posts a day it should be upgraded to Oracle. =)

Now just if their stock would go higher!!!!

<start Oracle Rant>
Oracle is a more expensive product that requires more expensive hardware, and a more expensive admin...

Again why would the site move to oracle? check out tpc.org SQL server is the reigning speed king right now, and Oracle isn't even close. In most instances Oracle is 3-5 times more than SQL server, and a ton more than the free MYSQL.

And don't even get me started on their client software.!!!

I agree that Oracle is far overpriced and absolutely not worth it for this site. However, MS SQL isn't cheap, either. Their licensing scheme can get kind of weird when using it with Internet-based apps with many simultaneous connections.

I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying about the performance differences. It's just that MS's licensing can get very weird, so be careful. And seriously, MySQL can handle this site with orders of magnitude more people and still not show any performance issues. There's just no reason to pay for an expensive db server when you can get a free one that absolutely works fine for this site.

There is a table that needs to be restored. It somehow got deleted.

There is a possibility of being hacked. Which is what I suspect cause I don't see how a file can just go missing.

I'm still trying to contact "Takao" to get it back up but he is hard to contact since he is in Japan right now.

Victor
I'm the one trying to help. I researched the error VQracer gave me and it does point to a table that's missing and needs to be restored. Unfortunately, this is a custom table Takao made and is not a part of vBulletin.

Someone should really get in touch with the hosting provider of this site to see what the options are (if that table alone can be restored or worse, restore the site from a backup before everything went haywire). The second option would lose all posts made after that day.

As I said to VQracer, if you guys need help with this site in anyway, please feel free to ask me.

damn...why dont y'all get your panties out of a bunch, especially you, zspot. I know all about mysql, oracle, sqlserver, etc. I am a DBA. I said oracle jokingly. jeezus! guess i should have put that 'LoL' at the end *blah*. if you knew how much i hate 9i, it would have been overly obvious.

But yeah...since mr. (maybe ms.?) zspot wants some constructive input to help solve the problem (even though it wasnt asked for).... the best bet would be to restore from the last successful backup before this disaster occured. But even then...more and more posts will be lost the longer they wait to do it.

nissan350z-

Most of my vented anger was at Oracle, and not you...sorry : )

Oracle does have its strengths, don't get me wrong, but in the shop where I work, we run it on HPUX, which makes it priced WAY over everyone else!!! Its frustrating sometimes.

I'm not in a position to insert constructive input, because it looks like no one is sure of what the problem is. In any event I wouldn't be a whole lot of help, cause PHP and MYSSQL aren't my strongest points.

How about we stay on topic here? If you want to have an Oracle vs. MySQL vs. SQL and whatever else, start a different thread, please. I also vote for a clean wipe of all posts made after the day the site went down. As was said above, the longer we wait to do this, the more posts we lose. I think everyone could deal with 1000 posts being lost if it meant the site actually worked. Besides, its not like someone won't post the exact same topic later, like people always do. Thanks for working on it guys, its really great that you are willing to work so hard for the 350 community. Wish I could help, but don't know jack about that kind of stuff. Good luck, and thanks again.

Ahhhh! I spent hours pulling my hair out tring to figure out why even though I'd registered, etc, I kept ketting "invalid user name" messages when I tried to log in. I've re-registred and all seems well.

Thanks for the clarification.

Victor, any idea when Takao is coming back? Is he checking his email at all?
