The tree is not going to fall down or move unlike the deer upon impact.

Now if you hit the deer and then spin out of control and ...well...hit a tree or fall into a ditch..or roll over...well then I can't argue with you there. total loss would be expected.
Hitting anything bigger than a rabbit at 50+ mph will cause damage, hit something like a deer or bigger? Thats probably going to hurt, less than a tree yes but just as bad

Back on topic.. Glad no one was hurt.

I hate deer. I have nearly hit them on numerous ocasions. When deer season opens I go just to kill the useless beasts. They don't taste all that great and usually i just give the carcas to whatever friends I am hunting with. Before anyone flames me...The deer I happily killed yesterday may save the car you drive today.

True. My insurance said if I would have hit the deer instead of swerving off the road into small trees, there would have been no deductible.

true story, I hit a rock, I had to argue with my insurance to make it comprehensive instead of collision. They told me if it were an animal it would be automaticly comprehensive vs. a tree or post, collision. The thing is, a deer could kill you going through the windshield. Things happen for a reason...
