american roads suck because of cheap politicians who would rather spend the money that's supposed to be alloted to road work and maintenance on other things. it used to be that, from the compacted dirt up to the surface, the composition of a road had to be at least 24" thick. then they realized hey, we're spending a lot of money building really good roads, let's spend LESS and just build barely decent roads! so it went down to something like 12", and now it's around 10" [at least, in california it is] which is why roads get buckled and broken up so much more quickly than they used to.

i had a similar situation while on vacation in Puerto Rico. Was in the fast lane doing about 75 when a 5 gallon bucket flew out of a pick up truck. I didn't have enough time to swerve out of the way and ended up hitting it straight on in a rental altima. The bucket cracked the front bumper and broke the front license plate bracket.
Ended up going to a hardware store and buying some screws to mount the plate. Was able to mount the plate a little higher to hide the cracked bumper. Thank god the rental place didn't notice!
