Trading Base for Nismo?
Well this thread isn't for me, but for a friend.
I didn't know what advice to give him so I figured I'd post on a very nice, search police free, board!
So he bought his Z around this time last year, and then he was so upset when the Nismo's came out, because he absolutely loved it. He asked me what the dealers impression would be since he has aftermarket exhaust, and intake, etc, but doesn't have his old stock ones to swap out. So he asked me what I should do, but the real question we both came up to was, Will the dealer 'knock down' the value of the car since it has aftermarket exhaust, intake, and rims? He has the HKS and Stillen intake like myself, and has about $1200 non-branded rims. And also, wouldn't he have to give a great deal of money out of his pocket?
Thanks for your guys' help.

There's an ongoing thread in the 350z general forum about a similar topic here:

The consensus would be to keep your current car unless you are willing to lose several thousand of dollars for a similar 350z. If you can wait, then there should be a new updated engine and body restyle in 2009. Bottom line is there will always be a newer and improved version of anything, so in the end it's what you feel it's worth to keep up with current year vehicles.
About aftermarket items; you probably aren't going to even get close to what you paid for them, so you might as well just swap out the parts for stock ones if possible. If you plan on getting a Nismo, then you can use most of those parts towards the new car, or sell them outright. From a resale standpoint, you're going to do better if you just return the car to stock form unless you can find a private buyer that wants your exact car with mod configuration, and is willing to pay a premium for those parts. Most people aren't going to pay extra for mods that you perform on a car outside of factory options unless it's something they specifically want.

He said he really wanted the Nismo and that he didn't really care for the 09, since the Nismo is a limited edition car. I don't know. He's weird.
Tell him if he wants the Nismo so bad, then forget about all the other
things, and just get the Nismo. He will regret it if he does not go after it.
The $$$ aspect should not matter, a move up from a base to a Nismo
is definately worth it. I traded my 06 base for my Nismo, and I did not
even think twice about it, I just had to have it.

[QUOTE=vnarang] Here's how it went down, basically he had an 07 camry, or the newer ones, and traded it in for the 350z. He didn't have to pay anything out of his pocket for that trade-in, and I guess he's just relying on that idea that maybe the dealership will do the same to his car [QUOTE]
that probably won't work so well, considering NISMO's cost 38k+, and considering the fact your friend bought a base model says he most likely can't afford a nismo.

The Nismo was the first Z I test drove on the lot when I was shopping. I definitely was tempted to buy it, but couldn't justify paying the extra $13K for it. Then again, I got a killer deal on my 2008 Carbon Silver Base, for $25,800 drive out.
I think your friend should stick with what he's got unless he's willing to take the hit.

Tell him to go in n tlk to a dealer. See what the guy says. He might be a dick and say it'll kill value. Or be cool like the guys I had when I traded in a turbo'd civic and not have the mods kill the value one bit.
As for the new z's that are comin out. As I have been reading.. They are gettin the g37 motor and the body is STAYING THE SAME.. there is NO redesign happening at all. maybe more weight added. But they will look almost the same. In that case keep your hr motor Z.... Nismo be hot to have..

if the car is too old to sell on the lot which an '03 probably would be, it will be auctioned off. In that case the add ons wont decrease the value too much just tell him to stick to his guns when working out the prices on his trade in and the nismo.

I went to the dealer with him today, saw the infamous sexy Nismo Z in PPW.
We both knew more about the car than the guy trying to convince us to buy the car right away. There was a $5k mark-up, which made me laugh. He's like..."It's only $38k!...or I mean $44k." I asked him what number it was and he was looking at the VIN number. But it was number 990, ;o.
I don't know, he's pretty much convinced that he wants a Nismo, but he said he had to wait until April, which I'm not sure will be there.
Always get what you want and don't settle for less or you will not be happy (so long as it's not way out of your league). Even if it means you have to tighten up your budget in other places, you will still be happier on that tighter budget with a car you like more. If a couple of hundred dollars a month is really going to make that big of an impact on your finances then maybe your goals are a bit unrealistic.
I mean I'd really like that Lambo and all, but I already know before I even start thinking about it that it's out of my price range by a mile. I knew my max price before I even started looking. I decided that $40k was my max and I financed exactly $40k for my Z after warranty, gap, road hazard, taxes, etc... But I also got exactly what I wanted.
I had a 07' base first, to save cash. But I wasn't happy with it a couple of weeks down the road. The single biggest aggravation was the lack of cruise control. I probably could've lived without the stereo controls, the bluetooth, and even the power rear-view mirror. But having them is always a plus. Bottom line, as long as it's within your means, don't settle for less. You'll regret it later.

Im sure you can find someone with a stock exhaust that will give it to you for like 20 bucks. You can always sell you aftermarket parts and ask for peoples stock part with the sale.
