I haven't had the opportunity to attend a track event yet with the Z. Has anyone had any closed course timed events vs. any Boxsters or even poorly driven Carreras.
Like to hear of successes or blow-outs.

LOL.....My father in-law drives integra and he can keep up with many sport cars on the road course. He is close to 60 now and still very active. He used to drive F1 in Montreal.

There was a 996 Carrera at Lime Rock two weekends ago in my run group (instructor group). He was the only car that I lapped (passed twice) in every single run group.
But... This data point is meaningless. The guy was obviously taking it easy and wasn't trying to go for lap times. On a real road course, until you get to the pro series it's all about the driver. Even in the instructor run group of a BMWCCA event where everyone on the track has 5+ years of track experience, it's still a skill game. I was getting passed by better driven E30 BMWs while I was passing this 996, several VERY well set up E36 and E46 M3s, a Ferrari 328, etc....
It all depends. If I had to estimate, I would guess that stock for stock (I was also the only car on street tires there) the 996 would be a bit quicker (1-3 seconds on 1:04 or so laps).
Oh, I just remembered - there was a 996 turbo that had all the GT2 bits and pieces (X50 package, aero, ceramic brakes, seats) + had been upgraded with an additional 100hp (total =560hp), 200 lbs of weight gone, coilovers, Hoosiers, full cage etc... And he OWNED me!
He actually lapped me in every session. I estimate he was running 57-58 second laps (to my 1:04s). The driver was good and the car was SICK! But he had $200K+ in that car and I am only at $31K.

Yeah the money makes a big difference! For the dollar, the Z is much better on the track than a 911.
Also, my grandpa is 93 and he drives a 1988 cavalier and he PWNS guys in their Porsches and Ferraris at the local track. I mean, you gotta think...this guy has been driving for 77 years so he really knows what he is doing!

No really, his wheelchair is turboed
As Jason Bourne was pointing out, the driver is most important ... his track experience and, as a result, skill. In autoX, the 350z (as many of you already know) competes head to head with Boxsters in BS class.
Locally, the Boxsters own the Z, not because the cars are better (though they are lighter, a real advantage in Solo), but because most of the Z drivers are Novices. It'll take time and practice for these guys to get in the same part of the timing sheets as the Boxster drivers.

No track time with mine yet, but at a Porsche club autocross I smoked everything there. There were 996s, 993s, 911s, 944s, 914s. The guys driving the newer Porsches paid no attention to my car at first, but after they saw how fast it was they were all over it. It was actually pretty funny...

Between Boxsters S's and 911's, it's purely driver. At my last track event (see all results below) I was only 1.7 seconds slower than a freakin GT2!!! Actually, if you look at all the laptimes, I was faster than him most of the day.
The car that won in my class was a Boxster S. I was faster than him all day too, but I had to skip out on the last session of the day. Last session was 15-20 degrees cooler in temp with a nice cloud cover to also cool the track as well. Very helpful when most of the day it was 100+ degrees!! Ultimately in those better conditions, he pipped me by .8 seconds. I am never leaving early again!!!! LOL

Still driving the Boxster S that I drove daily for a long time, I have to say that the stock suspension is much better and it feels a lot nicer. It also comes with better tires stock.
Z suspension is much easier and less costly to upgrade, though.

I went to a Porsche Club Auto-X back in October when I only had 2500 miles on my Z and I was keeping within 1 second of Boxster Ss and 911s (2 minute course) and this was my first time ever at an auto-X. A lot of the Porsche guys were impressed and commented on how they liked the car.
