And that is something I’ve never understood… You would think that a rotary engine spinning in one direction (instead of the reversing direction scenario of a traditional cylinder engine) would be more efficient because it should generate less friction (i.e., resistance and heat). Instead it is just the opposite. That (along with terrible reliability) was the big complaint of Mazda’s earlier rotary engine sports car in the 1970’s (along with its problem with sticking needle valves in the carburetor, which Mazda stubbornly refused to acknowledge and ultimately lead to the car’s demise).

^^ You are right. Both cars are nearly the same running stock suspensions on the "skid pad."

Mazda enthusiasts describe the difference as a "go-cart" feel, which is something you notice (I certainly did) when pushing the Mazda hard into a turn.

the z and the 8 were the two cars i debated over.

the main thing that turned me off about the 8 was the rotary. first of all it never produced the kind of power mazda claimed. second of all, the gas mileage is horrid. their of all, i just didnt like the idea of an engine that designed to burn oil.

x2

The debate didn't last long with me. The 8 is just not nearly as nice a car overall as the Z. So damn glad I got the Z... a friend of mine drives an 8 and I was checking it out the other day. Just really couldn't find any sort of decent benefits that the 8 has in visual and performance categories to outweigh the Z.

It surely was an easy choice for me. I'm sure different situations could yield a different outcome... children is the reason my friend bought an 8.

18 mpg (gas) 1k mpq (oil)...... haha no other car where you have to fill up gas, and oil at every gas station stop!!! i love the handling and the electric steering, the car feels so solid. my sister has the autotragic RX-8..... cant make judgement on the 6spd. I would never trade my hr z a rx-8.

Imma disagree with you about the interior op.... I think its a bit extravagant on the rx8. It's nice. My friend had one. Not a sporty feel. Modability on that car is worse then basic bolt ons on a civic. Gas mileage is worse then an untuned twin turbo z. Or an escalade for that matter. If its not an rx7 I dont wanna know....

I used to own a RX8, but sadly there were no solid FI kits coming or out to even this day that I had to jump ship to a Z.

9K redline would be cool but compared to the other cars in its class it doesn't match up. I would rather take my old S2000 back if I ever had to get rid of my ZR.

I like the car. I was originally planning on buying one, but then I looked more into the Z. If I had a need for 4 seats, I'd pick one up.

My parents have one (part of the reason that caused me to look at other cars), and its a very nice car. Yea, the power isnt up to par with the Z or other 300hp+ cars, but its still pretty quick.

As for the poor gas mileage, the lower insurance rates kind of offset that. It is classified as a 4 door 1.3 ltr car

ive had a rx8 for 3 months...sold it. The only good thing about the car is the looks..trust me. ..
no power ...no torque...feels heavy on the road. ..
i didnt like it at all..even my previous 300zx was way better...
that why i bought a 350z!!

I wanted to get an RX7 bad as it is a gorgeous car but after hearing about owners having to replace their engines every few years I decided against it. Couldn't be happier with my Z. Compared to the RX7 the RX8 looks like a pug.
