weight distribution does make some difference... say 60/40 and a 50/50 will perform differently in corners....
well, I have to admit the 3% may not make that much difference, but...oh well~
A rear weight bias is inherently better at handling than a front bias. This was demonstrated in 1963 when Brit driver Jim Clark drove Colin Chapman's rear mounted open wheel racer to Indy. Clark led most of the race and had built up a huge lead against the front engine Offenhouser-powered roadsters. He lost when some small part failed on the notoriously unreliable Lotus. A rear engined car didn't win Indy until 1965, but Clark's dominating drive was the death knell for the OFFys and front engine cars in openwheel racing.

The final nail in the front engine roadsters coffin was when A.J. Foyt showed up in a rear engine car. He was the last holdout of those racers who could afford a brand new racer. Some front engine cars continued for a few years but they never won another race in Indy cars.

Having owned a rear mid-engined car, I can appreciate how well they handle. Just read the writeup in a Boxster road test to hear the praises.
