What type of gas are you putting in your Z
No one has mentioned that 89 grade often goes into the 91 or 93 tank at the station. During the summer months when I was in college, I worked for a local company. My job was coordinating fills from tanker trucks with the stations. It was all about timing, often to the hour. When a tanker truck delivered gasoline to a station, and we could not use all of the fuel, it went into any available tank. That meant that a lower grade was often deposited into a higher grade tank. Of course the customer filling from a 93 pump had no idea they were getting 89 grade fuel.
In those days, car engines were unable to compensate for lower grade fuels, so some customers occasionally reported “knocking.” Modern cars with fuel management controlled by sophisticated onboard computer systems do not suffer from this, and engine “knocking” and “run-on” is rare.
It’s safe to burn lower grade fuels in a Nissan engine. You lose a little on the performance and efficiency (mpg), but your engine is safe.
Think about this. If you dilute gasoline with ethanol (mostly water), and can get away with this, burning a lower octane isn’t much of a problem.

A good read on octane ratings... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating
It is a Wiki article, so treat as such.
It did give an explanation as to why different parts of the country offer 85-91 octane and others offer 87-93 (I've often wondered why).

It isn't that big of a cost difference between the differnt grades. Here in Cali, we only go up to 91 (publicly). If we had higher octanes, I would purchase those.
What the OP is considering is just downright lame.
In my area i saw a gas station that had regular 87 for $3.38, mid 89 for $3.49 and premium for $3.72. I don't understand the irregular pricing. I didn't get the regular, but it was really tempting. I don't think running 89 would mess anything up but i still wouldn't run it.

I walk to work cause gas is so high!
Tells me you didn't budget accordingly for a $30K car!
This is what is wrong with this FLIPPING COUNTRY! End of Rant! "Hey honey, the bank is giving us a loan of 4.0% on our house and our payments are only $941 a month. Oh great lets buy this new home. Fast foreward, 2 years later,"
"Honey, why is our house payment $1521 now, we can't afford that" , The Bank Statement says something about a Variable Rate. what does that mean". Well I guess we better put 87 in our Z's then, since we can't afford that extra $30 a month but whatever you do lets keep that Rent A Center 24" LCD since its only $12.00 a week!"
